“Each month states make changes to rates and rules. To keep you ahead of these changes we have put together the following summary of rate and rule changes that will occur in QuickBooks Sales Tax this month. With many users doing business in more than one state, this summary will be sent each month so you are aware of changes that may affect your business transactions both inside and outside your state”.

For a clear breakdown of changes, follow the link and select the state(s) you do business in. Even though QuickBooks already accounts for these changes, which you will see in your invoices, it’s always good to stay in-the-know about specific changes to better understand how your business is or is not affected.

It’s safe to say most, if not all business owners benefit from working with a reputable bookkeeper, but who REALLY needs one? Business owners who are actively involved in daily operations and beyond are most in need. Personal trainers, martial arts teachers, restaurant or coffee shop owners, beauty industry artists, etc., just don’t have the extra time in any given day to dedicate to maintaining clean books, and often these kinds of business owners really don’t like bookkeeping either. Some business owners feel perfectly comfortable managing their own books and they do it well enough that not working with a bookkeeper isn’t overly detrimental to their success. For those who don’t have time and/or really don’t like bookkeeping, hiring someone to do it for you will feel like the biggest relief and give you the chance to focus more attention on daily operations.

Don’t forget to backup your data! Online bookkeeping programs often have automatic backup features, or scheduled backups to help protect your data. Many desktop versions don’t though, meaning you’ll need to manually back it up on a regular basis. Thanks to the evolution of technology, the odds of losing all data is low but still never zero. Accidents happen, whether it be an employee accidentally deleting data, someone misplacing their work laptop, or even full computer system crashes—we hope this isn’t a fate anyone faces but being prepared means having security if something does go wrong.

Before you close up the office tonight, or shut your work-from-home office door, backup your data!

Taking the leap to start a business is exciting, empowering, and also… a little nerve-wracking. Even with mentorship from seasoned business owners, consulting services with experts in the field, and a team of people to support your dreams, there’s still so much to learn through experience. A stepping stone in that experience is funding! Where does the money to start a business even come from? Options might include self-funding, taking out a business loan, working with investors, applying for grants, or even leaning on crowd-sourcing. Depending on your business goals and the overall structure and nature of your new business, some of these options are going to be more accessible than others.

In Vancouver WA, there are a wealth of incredible financial resources available to help you fund your new business. Getting your quarterly estimated taxes paid on time and doing it without concern of drying out your cashflow can be a little tricky. From knowing what to do with your vouchers, where to send your payment, and even when they’re due, your bookkeeper and your tax accountant will have all the answers for you. While this may seem more up the alley of the accountant, your bookkeeper is who helps make sure you actually have the money to pay your taxes.
Business income often changes season to season, so preparing for those shifts takes strategy and a watchful eye, and that’s where your bookkeeper comes in. A well rounded team taking care of your financials helps ensure accuracy, timeliness, and that you carry less stress when those due dates are creeping up on you.

It's not a surprise to any business owner that not all payment processors are alike. While most often we're considering associated fees, another thing to consider is how or if the programs integrate well with accounting programs like Quickbooks. If you're a Quickbooks user you may find that platforms like Helcium, Square, Stripe, Shopify, Chase Payment Solutions, and a few others are easiest to use. You aren't limited to 3rd party processors though. Did you know that Quickbooks also has its own payment processor? Quickbooks Payments makes collecting payments, sending invoices, and utilizing other offered products nice and easy. If you're in the non-profit sector, these donation platforms also integrate seamlessly with Quickbooks: Bloomerang, Givebutter, Donorbox, and Neon One.

If you aren't quite sure which processor best suits your for-profit or non-profit company, set up a meeting with your bookkeeper to verify your options and figure out exactly what features you do and don't need for your business to thrive.

We made it through tax season! And now that we’ve all had a few work days and a weekend to catch our breath, it’s time to refocus on longevity. We’re mentally moving away from deadline-mode and toward longterm business health and success. That said, what we learn about ourselves and our business during tax season can inform how we run things going forward. If this time has felt especially stressful and had you scrambling to collect and organize documents, or file an extension, that’s a sign that proactive planning is needed and maybe an expert hand or two to lighten the burden going forward. Being more hands off and trusting experts to take care of your business allows you to more easily focus on what inspired you to start your business in the first place.

Even if tax season felt like a breeze and you have all the support you need to keep thriving, assessing tax findings can still benefit you. Consider having a meeting with your tax preparer to debrief. Whether you learn that nothing needs to be changed or small tweaks need to be made to keep things going smooth for next year, you’ll have the proper insight to move forward confidently.

Tax day is only 6 days away! Before your submission, double check that you’re accounting for all applicable tax deductions your business qualifies for.

A few common deductions include:
- work-from-home expenses
- marketing costs
- continuing education for skill development
- work related commuting costs
- business programs like software and apps to make running the business easier
- retirement contributions
- self employed health insurance premiums

IRS rules allow businesses to deduct expenses that are “normal and ordinary” respective to the industry your business operates in. Not all business structures handle tax deductions, or even tax forms, the same way. Don’t pass up on opportunities to save your business money and always check with your tax professional to make sure you’re doing it right!
