The W-4 isn't "set it and forget it." Life changes = form changes. Update yours when you:

• Get married, divorced, or have a baby
• Pick up a second job or side hustle (1099 crew — this is you!)
• Want a bigger refund OR bigger paychecks each month

Pro tip: If you're self-employed and also have a W-2 job, don't claim exempt on the W-4 — instead use the "other income" section (Step 4a) so extra withholding covers your 1099 taxes. That way you avoid a tax bill in April.
