This week on FRS Boardroom I'm talking about Trump Accounts. Leave the politics at the door. This is just about how the account works.
In short, it's a savings account for kids under 18. Family can put in up to $5,000 a year combined, it's invested in a low-cost index fund, and it becomes IRA-style money once your child turns 18. U.S. citizen kids born from 2025 through 2028 may also qualify for a one-time $1,000 from the government, but you have to request it. And Michael and Susan Dell have pledged $250 for kids 10 and under in ZIP codes with a median household income under $150,000.
Quick clarification on two details in the video: Dell's $250 is for kids 10 and under in certain ZIP codes, and only the money family puts in comes out tax-free. Earnings, employer money, and the $1,000 deposit are taxed when they're withdrawn.
It's not for every family, and it's not something I can set up for you. If you're wondering whether it fits, ask me. I'm happy to talk it through.
