What if you're assuming you can't afford for one of you to stay home — and you've never actually run the numbers?
A client called Bob this week with exactly that question. Young couple, two kids under school age, a third due in September. Both parents earn well — but with daycare costs climbing, they're asking whether it makes sense for one of them to step back after maternity leave.
Not because they're struggling. Because they want to know if it's actually possible.
So Bob's team is doing what they always do: building out the full plan. What happens to retirement savings on one income? What about the 529? What does it look like in a good market — and in three bad years in a row?
That's the difference between guessing and knowing.
More families are going to face this same fork in the road as the cost of living keeps climbing. If you've been assuming an answer without ever testing it, that's worth a conversation.
