The IRS is rolling out a new penalty relief program called Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP), launching this summer.

AEP applies to eligible tax year 2025 returns, 2026 quarterly returns, and future tax periods. If you have a clean filing and payment history for the prior three years (or 12 consecutive quarters for quarterly returns), the 𝐈𝐑𝐒 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞, 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐩𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞-𝐭𝐨-𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. No call needed. You'll just get a notice confirming the relief.
