The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Retirement Accounts

Retirement accounts can be powerful tools for building long-term wealth—but not all accounts are created equal. In this episode, we break down the “good,” “bad,” and “ugly” sides of popular retirement options like 401(k)s, IRAs, Roth IRAs, and more. You’ll learn how each one works, where they shine, where they fall short, and the common mistakes people make when using them so you can make more informed decisions about your own retirement strategy.

I wasn’t the best student growing up, but my time in the Marine reserves prepared me more for this line of work than I could have expected.

Discipline, preparation, and doing things the right way carried over. That’s how I approach planning now. Take something that feels overwhelming and break it down into something clear and manageable.

Most of the work is just helping people understand what they already have.

Only about 1 in 4 households even have a Roth account, and many of them aren’t even fully using it.

Florida helps by removing state income tax completely, but your retirement income is still subject to federal taxes, which is where strategies like this can matter.

A Roth creates a pool of money you can access later without adding to your taxable income, which can give you more flexibility in how and when you draw income in retirement.

I recently became a Registered Social Security Analyst because I kept seeing the same thing. People making this decision without ever seeing how it actually works.

I walk clients through the details in a way that makes sense. How timing changes your benefit. How it impacts your spouse. What tradeoffs you’re really making based on your situation.

It’s not about doing something complicated. It’s about understanding what you’re choosing before you make the final call and ensuring that everything fits together so there aren’t any surprises down the road.

“I don’t want to make a mistake with Social Security that I can’t fix.” That’s usually how the conversation starts when you’re approaching retirement.

As a registered social security analyst, I walk clients through it step by step so you can actually see what each choice means. What happens if you take it at 62? What changes if you wait? How it will affect your spouse and the rest of your income?

My job is to take something that feels permanent and make sure you actually understand what you’re choosing.
