🎓 College Students: Let’s Talk Taxes (Real Quick)

If you received a 1098-T, that does NOT automatically mean you’re getting a refund.
I know… nobody tells y’all this part.

That form is informational. It helps determine if you (or your parent) qualify for an education tax credit if it’s filed correctly.

Here’s where students get tripped up:
• Filing when a parent should actually claim the credit
• Assuming scholarships are always tax-free
• Forgetting books and out-of-pocket expenses
• Guessing instead of asking questions

There are credits out there worth up to $2,500, but I see students miss them every year simply because they were never taught how this works.

📚 Taxes = financial literacy.
And college students deserve education on this too.

👉 If you have a 1098-T and you’re unsure how to file, don’t guess.
📩 DM me “1098-T” or book a consult so we can make sure it’s done right and you’re not leaving money on the table.

✨ Ask questions. Learn the game. Keep your coins where they belong.

Great morning!!! ☀️

Irs is officially Open!!!

Most refunds are issued within 21 days, but delays can happen.

🚨 If you claim EITC or ACTC, the IRS cannot release refunds before mid-February — this applies to your entire refund.

Refunds may also be delayed due to:
✔️ Identity verification
✔️ Missing or incorrect information
✔️ Manual IRS review

📌 Direct deposit is the fastest option. Don’t plan bills or purchases around a specific refund date.

🚨🚨 TAX GEM READ THIS 🚨🚨

Let’s talk about SINGLE filing status because a LOT of people are confused 👀💭

📌 IRS FACTS (NO OPINIONS) 📚

You file SINGLE if you are unmarried as of December 31 and you do NOT qualify for another filing status.

Single does NOT require
❌ dependents
❌ household support
❌ owning or maintaining a home

It simply means you’re filing based on your income and your facts 💼💰

📌 REAL LIFE SCENARIO 👇🏽

You’re unmarried 👤
You have a child 👶🏽
But you did NOT pay more than half of the household expenses 🧾

🚫 Even with a child, you do NOT qualify for Head of Household

✅ SINGLE is the correct filing status

📌 WHY SINGLE CAN BE BETTER THAN HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD ⚠️

Filing Head of Household when you don’t qualify can lead to
🚨 IRS letters
🚨 audits
🚨 penalties
🚨 paying money back

SINGLE may look smaller 💸 But it keeps you protected and compliant 🛡️📚

💎 A refund you can KEEP beats a refund you have to PAY BACK ♟️💰

Because filing correct > filing risky every time 💯

🚨 Let’s clear this up once and for all 🚨

YES you can file ALL of your children!

👶🏽 Child Tax Credit CTC

You can receive the Child Tax Credit for ALL qualifying children under age 17.

💰 Earned Income Credit EIC

The Earned Income Credit caps at 3 children meaning the credit amount maxes out at 3 NOT that you can only claim 3 kids.

❌ Do NOT let anyone tell you that you can only claim 3 children.

That is incorrect.

📌 You claim ALL your qualifying dependents the credit just calculates differently.

🚨 HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD vs SINGLE READ THIS BEFORE YOU ARGUE 🚨

This is IRS-based, not opinion.

🏠 To qualify for Head of Household (HOH) you must:

✅ Be unmarried
✅ Have a qualifying person live with you more than half the year
✅ Pay MORE THAN 50% of the total household expenses

📌 There is NO minimum income requirement for HOH
📌 The IRS cares about MATH + PROOF, not feelings

🧾 Household expenses the IRS counts:

✔️ Rent/mortgage
✔️ Utilities
✔️ Food eaten in the home
✔️ Home insurance/property taxes

❌ Personal expenses (car note, phone, hair, clothes, etc.) do NOT count

🔍 REAL-LIFE SCENARIO (MAKE IT MAKE SENSE)

💬 “I made $20,000 and have 3 dependents. Am I HOH?”

👉🏾Income and dependents alone do NOT decide HOH.

📊 $20,000 income ≈ $1,667/month
🏠 Rent $1,400
💡 Utilities $300
🍽️ Food $600
➡️ Household costs ≈ $2,300+/month

❓The IRS will ask: HOW did you pay more than half?

If:
• Housing assistance
• SNAP
• Family help
• Shared bills

…paid part of those costs, that part does NOT count as you paying it.

➡️ If the math doesn’t add up, HOH does not apply, even with dependents.

🔁 WHY A PREPARER MAY CHANGE HOH TO SINGLE

🚩 Filing HOH incorrectly is a major audit trigger
✔️ A preparer must file what is defensible, not what’s preferred
✔️ This protects you from audits, penalties, and repayments

🧠 BOTTOM LINE

Head of Household is proven, not chosen.

If you can’t show how you paid more than half, the IRS will say Single period.

🚨 IMPORTANT TAX FILING NOTICE 🚨

Y’all be mindful if a client has an IRS Identity Protection PIN this is NOT optional
Their tax return cannot be filed without it

📬 The IRS mails the IP PIN every year
If the client does not have that letter filing will have to wait

⚠️ The IRS IP PIN retrieval system is down until the 6th
No workaround no override

This is especially important for cash advance clients
Returns submitted without an IP PIN will be rejected
Rejected advances hurt approval ratios and we do not want our funding rate to drop

Please make sure clients secure their IP PIN before submitting so we avoid delays and unnecessary rejections.

🖱️💸 Before you say your tax preparer charged you $1,000… READ THIS.

Here’s what people keep missing 👀👇🏽

Your tax preparation fee might be reasonable but there are OTHER fees involved that do NOT go to your preparer.

✨ Let’s break it down:
💻 Bank product fees → not paid to your preparer
💰 Refund advance / loan fees → not paid to your preparer
🏢 Service bureau fees → not paid to your preparer
📡 Transmission & technology fees → not paid to your preparer
⚙️ Some software fees → built in and CANNOT be removed

The ONLY fee your preparer controls is the tax preparation fee.

📝 What YOU should be doing:
✔️ Review your fee disclosure
✔️ Ask questions before signing
✔️ Understand what you’re agreeing to

And let me be clear if your preparer can’t explain your fees in plain language, that’s your sign to find someone else to file with.

📌 Knowledge saves you money, confusion, and messy Facebook posts.

🚨 TAX MYTH ALERT CHILD SUPPORT EDITION 🚨

Paying child support does NOT mean you automatically get to claim the child on your taxes.

Here’s how it really works ⬇️

✔️ Only ONE parent can claim the child each tax year
✔️ Usually it’s the custodial parent (child lived with them more than half the year)
✔️ The non-custodial parent can ONLY claim the child if the custodial parent signs IRS Form 8332
✔️ Paying child support alone gives ZERO tax rights

No form = no claim. Simple. Clear. IRS rules not opinions.

💬 If you’re unsure who should claim the child, ask before you file, not after the IRS flags it.

12/31/2025

🚨 TAX MYTH: “Everyone qualifies for a refund advance.”

❌ Not true.

A refund advance is NOT guaranteed. It’s a bank product and approval is based on multiple factors including:
✔️ Income type
✔️ Filing accuracy
✔️ Identity verification
✔️ Bank guidelines not the tax preparer

Your tax professional does not approve advances. The bank does.

💎The goal is a correct return first. Everything else comes second.

This is why choosing a knowledgeable tax preparer matters misinformation leads to frustration every tax season.

Education over assumptions. Always.
