In case you hadn't heard: The IRS has extended the deadline for much of Maine due to two different federal disaster declarations.

Those affected by the storms and flooding in December were given a deadline of June 17th. This includes Androscoggin, Franklin, Hancock, Kennebec, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, Waldo, and Washington counties.

Those affected by the January storms and flooding were given the extended deadline of July 15th. This includes Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington and York counties.

The counties listed in both declarations are given the latter date. So all of Maine, except Aroostook County has one of the two due dates.

Residents in certain areas of the following states are eligible to extend: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Washington, and West Virginia. The majority of these extensions have been granted due to natural disasters, such as severe storms and flooding or wildfires.

If you believe you will still not be ready to file before the extended due date, you must file an extension request by the normal due date of April 15th for most of the US and April 17th for Maine and Massachusetts.

Maine minimum wage on January 1st. Employer's, verify that you are in compliance. Employees, make sure your employer's took notice. I know of at least two employer's (not clients) that did not implement the 2023 increase until their employee informed them months later.

Tipped wage minimum is now $7.08. If you work in Portland, the tipped wage minimum is $7.50 as long as you receive at least $175.00 per week in tips.
