Watching your kids grow up comes with plenty of exciting milestones. Some of those milestones can affect your taxes, too. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

As certain child-related tax credits and benefits phase out, your tax bill could increase if you're not prepared.

Here are some ages worth watching:

๐Ÿ‘ถ Age 13: Dependent Care Credit
Generally, childcare expenses only qualify for this credit while your child is under age 13. If you've been claiming the credit, this milestone could affect your taxes.

๐ŸŽ“ Age 17: Child Tax Credit
For 2026, the Child Tax Credit is up to $2,200 per qualifying child under age 17. Once your child ages out, you may still qualify for another dependent-related credit, but the tax benefit can be smaller.

๐Ÿ’ผ Age 19โ€”or 24 for full-time students: EITC
For purposes of the Earned Income Tax Credit, a child generally must be under age 19 at the end of the yearโ€”or under age 24 if they're a full-time studentโ€”along with meeting the other qualifying-child requirements.

๐Ÿ  Ages 18โ€“24: Dependency Changes
At some point, your child may no longer qualify as your dependent. When that happens, other tax considerations can change, depending on your circumstances and state rules.

So what can you do?

โœ”๏ธ Keep track of these age milestones
โœ”๏ธ Review your paycheck withholding
โœ”๏ธ Consider tax projections before the change happens
โœ”๏ธ Adjust your savings or estimated tax payments if needed

Many child-related tax benefits are designed to help offset the cost of raising a family. When those benefits change, planning ahead can help soften the impact.

If your child is approaching one of these key ages, it may be a good time to review your tax situation.
