So… why EPIC? 🌌

I’ve never really shared the whole story behind the name.

When I was naming my business, I wanted something that represented the way my brain works: see the problem, understand why it exists, figure out what other problems it could create, and then build a solution.

That search somehow led me to EPIC 201912552b, or K2-18b, and the search for potentially habitable worlds beyond Earth.

What struck me was the idea of looking for answers to problems most of us aren’t even thinking about yet.

And I thought:

That’s it.

That's what I want EPIC to do for businesses.

Not just solve the obvious problem.

Look deeper. Ask better questions. Find what others might not see yet. Then figure out what to do about it.

That’s why EPIC isn’t just a catchy name to me.

It represents the way I think. 💙

⚙️ Sometimes the answer to a business problem really is new software.

And sometimes it’s a whiteboard, a marker, and somebody finally asking, “Wait...how is this supposed to work?” 😄

Take something like managing service and maintenance work.

Before choosing technology, think through:
📋 How does work get requested or identified?
📅 How does it get scheduled and assigned?
📱 What does the person doing the work need to document?
✅ How do we know it’s actually complete?
📁 Where does that information live afterward?

Once the process makes sense, then you can decide where technology and automation can make it easier.

That order matters.

Technology can support a good process. But adding technology to a confusing process can just give you a faster, more expensive confusing process. 😉

Process first. Technology second.

If you have a process in your business that has become harder to manage as you’ve grown, EPIC can help you step back and design a better way to handle it.

Finding a grant is only part of being ready for one. 💡

One thing organizations don’t always think about until an opportunity appears is everything that may come after the application.

Before pursuing funding, take a look at the basics:
📁 Are your financial records organized and up to date?
💰 Can you clearly track how funds are received and spent?
🧾 Do you have documentation to support expenses?
📋 Does someone understand the reporting and compliance requirements that come with the funding?
👥 Does your team know who is responsible for what?

Good grant stewardship starts long before an audit or reporting deadline.

The goal isn’t simply to win funding. It’s to have the systems in place to manage that funding responsibly once you receive it.

Payroll is one of those things nobody wants to discover a problem with after the fact. 😬

A smoother payroll process starts with a few basics:
👥 Keep employee information up to date.
⏰ Make sure hours, overtime, and time off are captured accurately.
🧾 Keep payroll reports, tax deposits, and supporting records organized.
🔍 Review payroll before it runs instead of assuming everything carried over correctly from last time.
📅 Keep up with the filing and deposit requirements that apply to your business.

This may sound simple, but a repeatable process matters. When payroll information lives in several places, or depends on someone remembering a step every pay period, it becomes much easier for something to get missed.

A good system should make the right process easier to follow.

Does your payroll process still depend too much on someone remembering what comes next?

A profitable business can still feel short on cash. 💵

That’s because profit and cash flow aren’t the same thing.

You can have a good month on paper while cash is tied up in unpaid invoices, inventory, equipment purchases, loan payments, or other timing differences.

A few simple habits can give you better visibility:
📥 Know how much cash is actually coming in.
📤 Know what’s going out and when.
📅 Look ahead at upcoming bills and tax obligations.
🔍 Review expenses regularly instead of waiting until year-end.
💰 Build some breathing room for unexpected costs when you can.

The goal isn’t just to have money in the bank today. It’s to understand what that money needs to cover tomorrow.

When was the last time you looked at your cash flow instead of just your bank balance?

If the numbers say the business is doing well but cash still feels tight, EPIC can help you get a clearer picture of where the money is going.

A little organization now can save a lot of frustration later. 📁

If your bookkeeping tends to become a “we’ll deal with it later” project, you don’t have to fix everything at once.

Start with a few simple habits:
🧾 Save receipts and supporting documents consistently.
🏦 Keep business and personal activity separate.
✅ Reconcile your bank and credit card accounts regularly.
📂 Keep important financial documents somewhere you can actually find them.

None of these things are particularly exciting. But together, they make it much easier to understand what’s happening in your business and address problems before they become bigger projects.

Good bookkeeping isn’t just about getting ready for taxes. It’s about having reliable information when you need to make a business decision.

What’s one bookkeeping task you’ve been putting off?

AI doesn’t have to run your business to make your business better. 🤖

One of the most useful questions a small-business owner can ask isn’t, “What can AI do?”

It’s, “Where can technology remove repetitive work without giving up good judgment?”

A practical place to start:
⚙️ Automate routine, repeatable steps
📋 Keep clear rules for work that needs consistency
👀 Have a person review anything that requires judgment
🔒 Be thoughtful about what business or customer information goes into AI tools

The goal isn’t automation for the sake of automation. It’s building a process that saves time, stays dependable, and still makes sense when someone besides the owner has to use it.

For most small businesses, that’s where technology gets genuinely useful.

What’s one repetitive task in your business you’d love to simplify?

Go get the funding!

Seriously — take the opportunity.

Grant funding can be a huge step forward for a business:
🔹 It creates momentum
🔹 It opens doors
🔹 It allows you to invest where you otherwise couldn’t

But what we see happen often is this:

The focus is on getting the award (which makes sense)—
and the system behind it gets figured out later.

At first, things seem manageable:
🔹 Expenses are tracked
🔹 Reporting gets submitted
🔹 Everything feels under control

But over time:
🔹 Documentation isn’t fully consistent
🔹 Costs aren’t clearly tied to specific activities
🔹 Processes weren’t built for the level of scrutiny required

And that’s when it starts to feel overwhelming.

Not because anything was done wrong—
but because the system wasn’t designed for what the funding actually requires.

That’s where we come in.

The goal isn’t to slow anything down.

It’s to make sure that once you get the funding:
👉 everything holds together
👉 everything makes sense
👉 and everything stands up when it matters

Go get the opportunity.

We’ll help you manage it the right way once you do.

Not every funding opportunity is looking for an idea. Some are looking for a solution that’s ready to move.

Louisiana’s new Rural Tech Catalyst Fund is designed for companies with healthcare-related products or services that can be deployed in rural communities within the next 180 days. That could include telehealth, healthcare access solutions, medical logistics, chronic disease support, digital health tools, and more.

This is not targeted toward businesses in the idea stage. As LED’s Josh Fleig explained:
“We need companies that have a product or service that can be deployed in the next 180 days.”

The program could provide:
• Grants or investments starting at $250,000
• Funding for pilots, expansion, and implementation
• Opportunities for companies working in Louisiana’s rural healthcare space

If your company already has a working solution and is ready to scale, this may be worth exploring quickly. Applications are now open, and the state is working on an accelerated timeline.

Learn more about the fund and eligibility here: https://rtcf.la.io/

For innovative businesses operating in healthcare, technology, logistics, or service delivery — especially those focused on solving real rural challenges — this is one to watch.
