Office Location Update

We want to share a quick update for our clients:

Just a reminder that we are no longer seeing clients at the Waterloo office. We were only there limited days each week and have fully consolidated to our West Union location as our primary office.

That said, we’ve made it easy to work with us in several ways:

• Schedule an in-person appointment in West Union
• Mail documents to our office
• Email documents securely
• Share files via Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar services
• Drop off documents in person

If you have questions about the best option for you, just reach out — we’re happy to help.

Sharing this again as W-2s are starting to come in.

For employees receiving tips or overtime pay, it’s worth taking a closer look this year:

• Tips are typically reported on the W-2, including any allocated tips
• Overtime premium pay may be reported in Box 14 or on a separate statement attached to the W-2
• Because this is the first year these deductions are available, accurate reporting matters

Even small reporting issues can affect how the deduction is calculated.

If you receive tips or overtime, it’s a good idea to review your W-2 carefully to make sure everything is reported correctly.

I bought this baseball card as a kid, forgot about it for years, and just found it again.

Kid me made a decent decision.
Adult me accidentally held it long-term.

Which, as it turns out, is a surprisingly solid tax strategy.

5 common tax mistakes we see with small businesses:

• Missing or misclassifying deductions
• Mixing personal and business expenses
• Forgetting quarterly estimated tax payments
• Not tracking mileage or vehicle use correctly
• Waiting until year-end to ask tax questions

Small issues can turn into expensive surprises without planning.

Questions? We’re happy to help.

📌 Tax Update for Retirees & Those Nearing Retirement: Social Security & the New Deduction

There’s a lot of misinformation going around, so let’s clear this up:

❌ Social Security is NOT automatically tax-free at the federal level
✅ A new federal deduction is available for retirees and those nearing retirement, which may reduce or eliminate the tax for some people — but it is not the same thing as full exemption

Here’s what matters:

• Social Security benefits can still be taxable federally, depending on total income
• The new deduction helps lower taxable income, but benefits are still reported
• This is a deduction, not an exclusion, and income limits apply

Important Iowa note:
✅ Social Security is NOT taxed by the State of Iowa
❌ Federal rules still apply when filing your federal return

Bottom line:
Many retirees will pay less federal tax under the new rules, but claiming Social Security is “no longer taxable” is incorrect.

If you’re retired or nearing retirement, understanding how these deductions work together matters.

📢 2025 Tax Update: Tips & Overtime Deduction Explained

You may have heard that tips and overtime are “tax-free.” That’s not exactly correct — but there is good news for 2025.

Here’s what actually applies for the 2025 tax return:

✅ Tips and overtime are still reported as taxable income
✅ Payroll taxes (Social Security & Medicare) still apply
✅ A new federal deduction is available for qualified tip income and qualified overtime pay
✅ The deduction is claimed on the tax return, which can reduce federal income tax

Important details to know:
• These are deductions, not exclusions
• Income limits and phaseouts apply
• Employer withholding may not change — benefits may show up as a refund at filing
• IRS guidance is still evolving, and documentation matters

Bottom line:
Many workers may see lower federal income taxes for 2025, but eligibility and savings depend on income, job type, and final IRS rules.
