Networking is defined by Merriam-Webster as the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups or institutions. Specifically the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business.
So, what is the point of attending a networking event to steadfastly ignore everyone else around and talk only with the coworkers presumably who have been around all morning and will continue to see the rest of the day? If the wish is to only visit with coworkers, go to lunch. Attending a networking event only to ignore every other person seated nearby or those unfortunate enough to be seated at the same table is flat rude.
Go to networking events in the spirit that they are intended. To network. There is always time to talk to coworkers at the office. As a manager, insist that employees split up, sit a different tables and interact with people they don't know. We attend networking events presumably to meet people, make contacts and maybe get some new business. As a business owner isn't that why you want employees at networking events?
