Approximately 44% of Americans regularly meal prep each week, but only 33% of Americans have a written financial plan, according to Schwab's 2021 Modern Wealth Survey.

What can meal planning teach us about personal finance?

1. Be intentional! Your health goals should dictate what types and quantities of food you eat. Your wealth goals should dictate your financial decisions such as asset allocation, savings rate, and risk tolerance.

2. The surest path to your health/wealth goals should be simple, repeatable, and consistent. Years of "small" sacrifice can produce incredible results over a lifetime.

3. Put systems in place to help keep you on track. If I had to decide what to eat every day and then prepare it each day my diet would be all over the place and take up a lot of time. Likewise, if you don't have direction and discipline with your income, you probably aren't on an efficient track to your goals. Save/invest first and spend the rest, don't get carried away spending only to save/invest what's left.

4. Consistent adherence will give you opportunities to splurge once and a while without guilt!

I promise no more chicken and broccoli posts for at least one month!

You are what you eat? How about “what children see, they repeat”? I was fortunate to be home with my daughters today and when it came to lunch I gave them a few options. To my surprise they wanted “daddy’s chicken”, my routine meal prep choice, so we all had chicken and broccoli for lunch!

Your children are paying attention and looking to you as the example to follow. Are you modeling good financial habits? We can plan for that!
