The last weekend before taxes are due

I had to take time for me this weekend because I have been getting by on coffee and little sleep. It doesn't matter I do not sleep more than 6 hours, but days and days with less have me burnt out.

And when are clients so rude to think you are available on weekends? I choose to work on weekends, send emails but I am not obligated to.

File extensions yourself, do not rely on your preparer to do so at the last minute. Communicate that you have done this and then get your paperwork in asap. Or, if we have been working together then an extension will be filed while you gather the necessary documents.

Do your licensed tax professional a favor, as we are all trying to do our best, to give us some time for ourselves

Winter 2026 has hit hard — and while my doodle Moon Doggie loves his snow zoomies, I’m tired of defrosting him!

On to something even chillier: IRS and USPS changes you need to know this tax season 👇

✉️ Postmark alert: Dropping mail at the post office doesn’t guarantee same-day stamping anymore. Hand it to a clerk if you need it dated today.
💵 IRS bank info: Don’t want the IRS knowing your account details? Hate to say it… they already do.
💳 No more paper refund checks: By Sept 30, 2025, refunds go digital. Direct deposit, prepaid card, or app only.
🕐 Business filers: 1120s, 1120Ss, and 1065s are due soon! Not ready? File extensions with both IRS + your state.

The IRS is getting serious in collecting unpaid taxes.

Thinking if you did not file a return they’ll never find out if you owe? Oh, they know. Yes, they know. Every employer, every bank you receive interest from, every crypto trade you make, every “ side job” that paid you and sent a 1099 on what you received, retirement and Social Security.

When you do not file a return, this is called self-verifying, they prepare it for you, hit you with taxes, interest and penalties.

Wage, bank, and Social Security can be garnished for unpaid taxes.

What is worse? Well, had you filed on time and not paid there are relief options. If not, makes my job harder and your pain last longer before garnishments can be removed.

File your returns.

If you cannot pay, hire an Enrolled Agent or CPA that can give you options.
Tax attorneys can help, but usually the debt must be extremely high or fraud may be noted by the IRS.

FYI
While on a group call with other professionals and a Stakeholder Liasion:

IRS computers SHUT DOWN at 11:59PM TODAY!

Nothing will be processed ( you can file returns they just cannot be processed)

As a professional I must work with the IRS and their timelines...and shutdowns.

I also cannot assist taxpayers UNTIL THE FUNDING IS APPROVED NEXT WEEK.

So, I am scambling like a gerbal in his wheel.

Are you a business owner in New Hanover County NC?

Sole Proprietor, LLC taxed as a business entity, S or C Corporation you are REQUIRED to file an annual business property tax listing before January 31, every year.

LLCs used to hold real estate need to file business property taxes on the businesses assets outside of the property. Computers, for example.

Think you can escape filing? For years New Hanover County has data mined NC Secretary of State’s listings of newly organized or incorporated businesses. The tax office may or may not send to the address on record the paperwork, it is the owner’s responsibility to file.

No, Your Tax Pro Hasn’t Been “Off” During the Shutdown

I’ve heard from a few folks who assume tax professionals have been sitting idle during the IRS shutdown. I promise you—that’s not what’s happening.

As an Enrolled Agent, I’ve been here working for you, but with limited IRS staff, closed or understaffed phone lines, and slower processing of Powers of Attorney and authorizations. It’s been frustrating for everyone who helps taxpayers, not just you.

At the same time, the IRS computers that spit out letters and collection notices never stopped. If you get a notice that says “respond within 30 days,” that deadline still applies.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

Do not email notices or letters to me (I delete them for security).
You can mail them, drop them at my new office, or upload them to your secure portal. If you are not on: iFirm , Verifyle or MyTaxPortal let me know and we'll get you ready for 2025 tax season.

Starting January 2025, active tax clients will receive an invitation to MyTaxPracticePortal for safer and easier document sharing and e-signatures.

Am I a certified fraud examiner? There are two designations. But traing goes towards either.

10/25/2025

During the current U.S. federal government shutdown (as of October 24, 2025), the IRS is not processing Powers of Attorney (POA) forms, such as Form 2848, due to the suspension of non-essential operations. The IRS's Lapse in Appropriations Contingency Plan indicates that activities like processing paper correspondence, including POA submissions, are on hold, as most of the staff handling these tasks are furloughed. Only automated systems and essential functions (e.g., e-filing, payment processing, criminal investigations) continue.
What this means:
New POA submissions (paper or fax) will not be processed until the shutdown ends and normal operations resume.
Existing POAs already in the Centralized Authorization File (CAF) system should still allow authorized representatives to act on behalf of taxpayers for essential functions, like accessing automated services or handling active compliance cases.
Delays are expected to create backlogs, so processing times may be extended even after funding is restored.
Processing
Amended returns, refund checks, new tax-exempt status applications, and pension plan determinations are on hold. Transcripts and notices not updated.
