How should I pay myself as a business owner? 💼

It sounds like a simple question, but the answer depends on how your business is structured.

A sole proprietor may take an owner’s draw, partners may receive guaranteed payments or distributions, and an S corporation owner who works in the business generally needs to receive reasonable compensation through payroll.

Swipe through for a general breakdown by business type.

No matter your structure, a few habits can help keep your records clean and reduce tax issues:

✦ Keep owner payments separate from business expenses
✦ Document how compensation is determined—especially for S corporation owners
✦ Revisit your approach as your income, responsibilities, or business structure changes

Not sure whether the way you are currently paying yourself still makes sense? Let’s review it before it becomes a tax-time concern. 📲

🚨 Please Note: This post provides general information. Your specific tax treatment will depend on your individual circumstances 🚨

Small side gig? Don’t ignore it at tax time. 💸✨

One of the biggest myths about side income is: “It wasn’t that much, so I probably don’t need to report it.” 📣Not always! 📣

Even if your earnings feel small, side gig income can still matter — especially if you received a 1099, were paid through an app, freelanced, picked up seasonal work, or earned money outside of a regular W-2 job.

For 2026, you may not have to file a federal return if your total income is below the standard deduction and nothing else requires you to file. But here’s the part many people miss: if your side gig earns $400 or more after expenses, you may still need to file because of self-employment tax.

That means a small summer gig, weekend hustle, or occasional freelance job can come with its own filing rules.

A little planning now can help you avoid a bigger headache later. 📌

Have questions about your side gig income or whether you need to file? Let’s talk it through before tax season sneaks up.

Turning 50 this year? First of all… happy milestone year. 🎉

But from a tax and retirement planning perspective, this birthday can also come with an important opportunity: catch-up contributions. 💸

Starting in the year you turn 50, you may be eligible to contribute above the standard annual limits for certain tax-advantaged retirement accounts, including:

🔹 401(k) and other employer-sponsored retirement plans
🔹 Traditional and Roth IRAs
🔹 SIMPLE IRAs

These extra contributions can help strengthen your retirement savings over time through potential tax advantages and compounded growth.

One important update to keep on your radar: Starting in 2026, certain higher-income earners age 50 or older may be required to make catch-up contributions to employer-sponsored plans as Roth, after-tax contributions.

The rules can vary depending on the account type, income, and plan details, so this is a great time to review your retirement savings strategy and see what makes sense for your long-term goals.

Approaching 50? Let’s talk through your options before the year gets away from you.

Market swings can feel messy… but they can also create planning opportunities. 📉✨

When the market feels uncertain, it is easy to focus only on the headlines. But volatility can also be a good time to pause, review your account mix, and look for tax-efficient strategies that may support your long-term goals.

A few areas worth revisiting may include tax-loss harvesting, account type, retirement planning opportunities, Roth conversion timing, and keeping a long-term perspective before making emotional decisions.

The key is knowing what applies to your tax picture, not just what sounds good online.

Swipe through for a few planning concepts to keep on your radar. ➡️

Thinking about your next move? Let’s talk through your options before you make a decision that could affect your taxes or long-term plan.

In other words, it is not just a “paperwork thing.” It matters.

Swipe through for a simple breakdown of a few key differences between employees and independent contractors — and why proper classification is something every business owner should take seriously. ➡️

Got an IRS letter? Take a deep breath first. 📬✨

Seeing an IRS notice in the mail can feel stressful, but it does not always mean something is wrong. Sometimes it is a simple request for information, identity verification, a payment reminder, or an account update.

If you are unsure what the notice means or how to respond, you do not have to figure it out alone. Our team can help review the letter, explain what it says, and guide you through the next steps with clarity.

Received an IRS letter? Send us a copy and let’s handle it together.

Can you do your own bookkeeping? Technically, yes. Should you do it forever? That depends. 👀📊

Bookkeeping is one of the first financial systems every business owner needs to get right. In the beginning, tracking income and expenses may feel manageable, but as your business grows, so do the details — payroll, receipts, loans, owner contributions, tax deadlines, and all the little transactions that can add up quickly.

Clean books are more than “just keeping records.” They help you make smarter business decisions, avoid messy tax season surprises, and understand what is really happening with your numbers.

Swipe through for a few things to consider before deciding whether DIY bookkeeping still makes sense for your business. ➡️

Need help setting up your books, organizing your records, or keeping your accounting on track? We’re here to help you build a cleaner system before it gets complicated.
