💡 Tax Fact: The IRS Can Tax Illegal Income

It surprises a lot of people, but income from illegal activities is still taxable.

Whether it’s cash-based work that isn’t reported or income from outright illegal activity, the IRS expects it to be included on a tax return. In fact, this is how they’ve historically prosecuted individuals when other charges were harder to prove.

At the same time, expenses related to illegal activities are generally not deductible, which can create an even bigger tax burden.
