College Takes Four Years. How Long Will We Need to Save for It?
When I approached an elementary school's PTA about a college financial aid workshop, a teacher told me it was too early.
I understood. College feels far away when our children are still carrying lunchboxes. But can we afford to wait until high school to start planning?
UC estimates about $47,400 a year for a new California resident living on campus in 2026–27, including tuition and living expenses, before financial aid. Four years at that same cost would be nearly $190,000, without future increases.
What if our child hopes to attend a private university? USC’s estimated annual cost for an undergraduate living on campus exceeds $103,000, before financial aid.
We may not need to pay the full published price. But how much do we hope to contribute, and how long will it take to prepare?
Starting early gives us more time to save manageable amounts, understand financial aid options, and adjust our plan.
When our child finds a school they love, how prepared do we want to be for the conversation about paying for it?
