IRS will start accepting income tax returns on Jan. 24, 2022. IRS may delay start of tax season by a week or so. Returns with EITC or CTC may have refunds delayed until March to verify credits.

2021 Tax Season IRS Problems
Over one million tax returns filed in 2020 are unprocessed.
The IRS is manually processing prior year earned income and additional child tax credit returns. Six million returns are in suspense. While in suspense, “Where’s My Refund” cannot give a status, the taxpayer advocate cannot assist and the practitioner priority help line cannot assist.
Returns e-filed in February are still unprocessed.
Electronic Fund Withdrawal requests have passed their payment dates due to the IRS’s inability to process accepted tax filings. The IRS claims that they have up to three weeks after the EFW date to draw the money.
At peak times, the IRS receives 500 calls per second. When overwhelmed the phone lines disconnect callers.
COVID outbreaks continue to shutdown campuses.
If electronically filing an amended return, the IRS will take sixteen weeks to process.
