Even as tax season has kicked off, Congress is still negotiating a $78 billion tax package with retroactive changes, including a boost for the child tax credit.

If enacted, the child tax credit changes could affect 2023 filings this season. But taxpayers shouldn't wait to file, according to the IRS. Here is the story:

The IRS has issued the 2024 optional cents-per-mile rates used to calculate the tax-deductible costs of operating a vehicle:

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, the standard mileage rate for the business use of a car (including vans, pickups, and panel trucks) is 67 cents per mile. (This is up from 65.5 cents per mile for 2023.)

The 2024 rate for medical or eligible moving purposes is 21 cents per mile. (For 2023, the rate was 22 cents per mile.)

For charitable driving, the 2024 rate is 14 cents per mile (unchanged from 2023).

Note that these rates apply to electric and hybrid-electric automobiles as well as gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

Tax Season to Start January 29, 2024

The IRS has announced that it will start accepting and processing tax returns on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024. The agency expects more than 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by the April 15, 2024, tax deadline. Although the IRS will not officially begin accepting and processing tax returns until Jan. 29, people do not need to wait until then to work on their taxes if they’re working with tax professionals.
