The IRS appears to have sent out large numbers of notice CP53E’s. The notices are asking for banking information. There is a concern that fraudulent players may be sending these as well. We strongly suggest you do not utilize the qr code on any letter to respond to the IRS.

Congress is considering legislation that will change laws pertaining to 2023 business and individual tax returns. If the legislation passes, ability to accurately file 2023 tax returns will likely be delayed.

Heads up: If you or someone you know used TurboTax to prepare your return this year and you mailed in your Oklahoma return because Turbo tax would not allow you to efile it, there is a high probability that you need to amend your Oklahoma return.

Don’t know if the error is user driven or TurboTax driven but is related to TurboTax asking you for location of stocks sold.

If your return has an amount on Form 511-A; Line 12 and stocks sold are not from an Oklahoma headquartered company, your return is probably incorrect and that error may be significant.

I have now seen 3 self prepared returns where taxpayers became uncomfortable with the extra deductions and have asked me to amend the returns. In one case tax amount due is more than $4000 without adding in penalty and interest.

OTC sends a letter to taxpayers on almost all amounts on that line. They will catch that error and you will owe back taxes and penalties. OTC interest rate is 15%.

If you have a high school or college age child who did not make enough income to file, have the return prepared anyway. If their occupation as an adult requires a license from the state of Oklahoma and they did not file in a year in which they had reportable income, their license may be held up/denied renewal by the Oklahoma Tax Commission until the issue is resolved. Clearing up the issue can be a challenging process especially if your child has waited until the last minute to obtain or renew a license.

Pay attention to your bank account activity. I am aware of several instances where checks mailed to vendors have been stolen. The thief images the check and changes the payee to themselves. If you just look at the check number and amount, those are usually unchanged. I am unaware of this occurring with handwritten checks; the compromised checks I am aware of are checks printed from computers. Unfortunately, in 3 instances I know about, it appears postal service employees may be involved. Some banks have implemented processes, for a fee , to combat this illegal activity.
