Do I Need to File an Income Tax Return?

Not everyone is required to file a federal income tax return—but filing requirements depend on more than just how much income you earned.

Your filing requirement may depend on factors such as:

• Your age and filing status
• Your gross income
• Whether you are self-employed
• Whether someone can claim you as a dependent
• Certain taxes or other special filing situations

Self-employed? Different filing rules may apply. In general, you must file a federal income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more.

Even if you are not required to file, you may still benefit from filing if you qualify for a refund or certain refundable tax credits.

Not sure whether you need to file? Your individual circumstances and income sources should be reviewed before making that determination.

MYTH vs. FACT: TAX EXTENSIONS

❌ MYTH: Filing an extension gives you more time to pay your taxes.

✅ FACT: An extension gives you additional time to file your tax return — not additional time to pay taxes owed.

For individual taxpayers who obtained an extension, the extended filing deadline is generally October 15, 2026, for 2025 federal individual income tax returns.

However, an extension to file does not extend the original deadline for paying tax due. Taxes not paid by the original due date may be subject to interest and applicable penalties.

Where Did the Cash Go?

Have you ever asked yourself:

BUSINESS OWNERS: DEMYSTIFYING THE BALANCE SHEET

What Does a Balance Sheet Actually Show?

The Balance Sheet helps answer an important question:

Where does your business stand financially?

It is organized into three main sections:

ASSETS
What the business owns, including cash, customer receivables, inventory, equipment, and other assets.

LIABILITIES
The debts and other obligations the business owes, including loans, vendor balances, credit cards, and other financial obligations.

EQUITY
The owner's or shareholder'sfinancial interest in the business after liabilities are considered.

Together, Assets, Liabilities, and Equity provide a snapshot of the financial position of the business at a specific point in time.

The basic accounting equation is:

Assets = Liabilities + Equity

Understanding the terminology used in your financial reports can help you better understand what the numbers are showing and communicate more confidently about your business's financial position.

BUSINESS OWNERS: DEMYSTIFYING THE BALANCE SHEET

Is Your Balance Sheet Telling the Full Story?

Many business owners check sales and profits but rarely review their Balance Sheet.

The problem is that an inaccurate Balance Sheet can hide accounting conditions such as:

• Cash balances that have not been reconciled
• Loans that do not match lender statements
• Incorrect customer or vendor balances
• Missing debts and other obligations
• Asset balances that no longer reflect the underlying financial information

When Balance Sheet accounts are not regularly reviewed and reconciled, the accuracy of financial information may be affected.

Financial information must first be reliable before it can be understood and applied.

A Balance Sheet should help business owners understand where the business truly stands financially in terms of its assets, debts and other obligations, and equity.

An inaccurate Balance Sheet can make it more difficult to understand the financial condition of the business and the information the numbers are actually showing.
