💰 How Much Money Are You Leaving Behind by Guessing Your Tax Return?

Every tax season, taxpayers focus on the obvious deductions—but it’s often the less obvious ones that raise the most questions.

For example, under very specific circumstances, certain working animals used to generate business income may qualify as a deductible business expense. A family pet won’t—but the fact that this question even exists highlights an important point.

Tax isn’t about guessing. It’s about understanding what SARS allows and ensuring every legitimate deduction is properly supported.

Unfortunately, many taxpayers:
• Miss deductions they’re legally entitled to claim.
• Accept SARS auto-assessments without reviewing them.
• Or claim expenses that SARS is likely to disallow.

With the 2026 tax season now underway, it’s worth having your return professionally reviewed before it’s submitted.

At AccountWorx, we assist employees, business owners, directors, commission earners, investors and independent contractors with preparing accurate, compliant tax returns while identifying every legitimate deduction available.

If you’d like confidence that your 2026 tax return has been completed correctly, we’d be happy to help.

Are you paying more tax than you need to?

Every year, thousands of South Africans pay more tax than legally required simply because they don’t know what deductions, allowances and tax-saving opportunities are available to them.

There is a significant difference between tax evasion (which is illegal) and tax planning (which is completely legal).

Some legitimate opportunities may include:
✔️ Retirement fund contributions
✔️ Medical tax credits
✔️ Business and employment-related deductions (where applicable)
✔️ Home office claims for qualifying taxpayers
✔️ Tax-free investment planning
✔️ Ensuring your SARS return is completed accurately and that nothing has been overlooked

The key is ensuring your tax return is prepared correctly, supported by the necessary documentation, and fully compliant with SARS requirements. Recent guidance has again highlighted the importance of understanding the deductions and tax-efficient opportunities available to South African taxpayers. (BusinessTech)

At AccountWorx, we don’t simply submit tax returns.

We review your complete tax position to identify legitimate tax-saving opportunities, ensure compliance with SARS requirements, and help you avoid costly mistakes that could lead to penalties or missed refunds.

🚨 Didn’t receive a SARS Auto-Assessment? Don’t panic – it may actually be a good thing.

Many taxpayers are asking why friends, family or colleagues have already received SARS auto-assessments while they haven’t.

The answer is simple.

SARS only issues auto-assessments where it has sufficient verified third-party information and your tax affairs are considered relatively straightforward. If your tax affairs are more complex, you will generally need to submit a tax return yourself. (IOL)

You may not qualify for an auto-assessment if you have, for example:

✅ Rental property income
✅ Business or freelance income
✅ Foreign income
✅ Capital gains
✅ Multiple sources of income
✅ Missing or incomplete taxpayer information on SARS systems (IOL)

The important point is this:

Not receiving an auto-assessment does NOT mean something is wrong.

It simply means your tax affairs require a proper review and a correctly prepared tax return.

Unfortunately, many taxpayers also assume that because they were not auto-assessed, they can wait until the last minute. That often leads to unnecessary stress, missing documentation, incorrect submissions and delayed refunds.

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we assist individuals, business owners, directors, commission earners, investors and taxpayers with more complex tax affairs by:

✔ Reviewing your complete tax position
✔ Identifying all allowable deductions and tax credits
✔ Ensuring all income is correctly disclosed
✔ Preparing and submitting your SARS tax return accurately
✔ Reviewing SARS auto-assessments where applicable before anything becomes final

Don’t leave your tax return to chance—or assume SARS has everything it needs.

🚨 SARS Auto-Assessment issued? Don’t accept it before it has been checked.

SARS auto-assessments are convenient, but they are not always complete.

Your assessment may exclude items that affect your final tax position, including:

✅ Medical expenses
✅ Retirement annuity contributions
✅ Travel claims
✅ Home office expenses
✅ Rental income
✅ Side-hustle or freelance income
✅ Donations
✅ Foreign income

Accepting an incorrect auto-assessment could mean you pay more tax than necessary, miss a refund, or create future SARS risk.

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we assist with 2026 tax returns and SARS auto-assessment reviews to ensure your return is correctly completed before submission or acceptance.

🚨 Expecting a SARS tax refund this year? You may not receive it.

Many South African taxpayers are unaware that SARS can withhold or delay refunds for several reasons, including:

❌ Outstanding tax returns from previous years
❌ Unverified or outdated banking details
❌ Returns selected for verification or audit
❌ Discrepancies between your return and third-party data
❌ Outstanding debt owed to SARS or other government departments

SARS has confirmed that refunds are only processed when your tax affairs are fully compliant and all verification requirements have been met. Even taxpayers expecting substantial refunds could face delays or receive nothing if issues are identified. (South African Revenue Service)

💡 Before you submit your tax return, ask yourself:

* Have all your previous returns been filed?
* Are your banking details correct?
* Have you claimed every deduction you’re entitled to?
* Is your return likely to trigger a SARS verification?

At AccountWorx, we help individuals and business owners:
✅ Review SARS auto-assessments
✅ Identify missing deductions and potential refunds
✅ Resolve outstanding tax issues
✅ Prepare and submit accurate tax returns
✅ Manage SARS verification and audit requests

Don’t wait until SARS tells you there’s a problem.

🚨 Don’t Assume Your SARS Tax Return Is Correct.

Tax Season 2026 has introduced new SARS processes designed to identify errors, inconsistencies and unusual claims more quickly than ever before.

One of the biggest changes this year is the introduction of the SARS Declaration Alert Questionnaire, which may require taxpayers to provide additional information shortly after submitting their tax return.

This means that accepting an auto-assessment or submitting a tax return without a proper review could result in:

⚠️ Delayed tax refunds
⚠️ SARS verification requests
⚠️ Additional supporting document requirements
⚠️ Additional tax, penalties and interest
⚠️ Lengthy SARS disputes

Many taxpayers do not realise that medical expenses, travel claims, retirement contributions, rental income and other deductions require careful consideration and supporting documentation.

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we help taxpayers:

✔ Review SARS Auto-Assessments
✔ Prepare and submit tax returns
✔ Respond to SARS verification requests
✔ Maximise legitimate deductions and credits
✔ Resolve SARS tax disputes

Before you accept your assessment or submit your return, have it professionally reviewed.

🚨 One small tax mistake could cost you thousands.

Many South Africans believe that if they earn below the tax threshold, they don’t need to submit a tax return. Unfortunately, that’s one of the most common — and costly — tax myths. ❌

Here are just a few reasons why you may still need to file:

✅ You received a SARS auto-assessment
✅ You had more than one employer during the tax year
✅ You made a withdrawal from your retirement fund or two-pot savings
✅ You earned rental, investment, commission, or side-hustle income
✅ You changed jobs during the year

SARS is using more third-party data and advanced verification systems than ever before. Accepting an incorrect assessment or failing to declare all income could result in:

⚠️ Delayed refunds
⚠️ Additional tax assessments
⚠️ Penalties and interest
⚠️ SARS verification or audit processes

Don’t assume. Verify.

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we review your tax position carefully to ensure you claim everything you’re entitled to while remaining fully compliant with SARS requirements.

🚨 TAX SEASON 2026: CRIMINALS ARE TARGETING SOUTH AFRICAN TAXPAYERS 🚨

Tax season has officially opened — and unfortunately, so has the hunting season for scammers, cybercriminals, and identity thieves.

Every year, thousands of South Africans receive:
❌ Fake SARS emails and SMSs
❌ Fraudulent refund notifications
❌ Phishing links designed to steal banking details
❌ Requests for documents from criminals pretending to be tax practitioners
❌ Fraudulent changes to banking and personal information

The reality is that submitting your tax return incorrectly, accepting an auto-assessment without checking it properly, or responding to the wrong communication could cost you far more than just your tax refund.

Before you click “Accept” on your SARS auto-assessment, ask yourself:

✅ Have all your deductions been included?
✅ Has your medical aid been captured correctly?
✅ Have retirement contributions been claimed?
✅ Has SARS used the correct IRP5 information?
✅ Is the communication you’ve received actually from SARS?

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we help taxpayers review their SARS assessments, identify missing deductions, verify tax calculations, and protect themselves against costly mistakes and potential fraud.

⚠️ Don’t let tax season become an expensive lesson.

🚨 Tax Season 2026 is here – and the early birds really do win.

Many taxpayers don’t realise that filing early can make a significant difference to their tax experience.

✅ Faster processing by SARS
✅ Quicker refunds while queues are shorter
✅ More time to correct errors if SARS requests additional information
✅ Less stress and fewer delays during the deadline rush

From 1 July 2026, SARS begins processing tax season submissions, and those who file early are often the first to receive their refunds.

Don’t wait until September or October when thousands of taxpayers are rushing to submit.

At AccountWorx Business Solutions, we help employees, professionals, business owners, investors and retirees submit their tax returns accurately, efficiently and on time.

📅 Beat the queues. Get ahead of the rush.
