Today's coffee break is with Hanlie.

There's one question she wishes more people would ask about their finances: “What happens if I can no longer earn an income?” It’s not necessarily the first thing we think about when planning for the future, but our ability to earn an income is one of the biggest financial assets we have.

When she's not thinking about financial planning, you'll probably find her completely obsessed with her grandchildren. ❤️
And one of the best lessons she's learned throughout her career? Never judge a book by its cover.

A pretty good reminder that there's often more to a person, a situation or a financial picture than meets the eye.

A retirement fund is one part of the picture. Your retirement plan looks at the bigger question: What do you actually want your life to look like when you stop working, and how are you going to fund it?

How much you need, when you want to retire, what income you'll need, what other investments or savings you have, and how your plans might change over time can all form part of that picture.
Because simply having a retirement fund and hoping it will be enough one day isn't quite the same as knowing where you're going.

Wat kon R100 jou in 1985 koop?
Heelwat meer as wat dit vandag sou koop.

Dis nogal ’n interessante manier om te sien hoeveel die wêreld van geld oor vier dekades verander het.

En dit is presies waar ons nuwe reeks begin.

Oor die volgende paar plasings gaan ons terugkyk na die geld, gebeure en veranderinge wat Suid-Afrika se finansiële wêreld vanaf 1985 gevorm het.

Ons het die span gevra: Wat is dit van die Vrystaat wat jou hart hier laat tuis voel?
Die antwoorde was so uiteenlopend soos die mense wat hier woon. Vir sommige is dit die natuur en oop ruimtes, vir ander die mense, die rustigheid, die vryheid en al die klein dinge wat ’n mens sommer net laat weet: hier hoort ek.

Her family would probably say she's famous for being the morning grump. 😅
Her secret useless talent? Heel clicking. Yes, apparently that's a thing.
But when it comes to money, she's got a pretty useful lesson: don't wait until you think you'll have more to start saving. Small amounts, saved consistently over time, can add up.

So there you have it. Morning grump, professional heel clicker and apparently the voice of reason when it comes to saving. 😂

We often think of a budget as something you need when money is tight. But budgeting isn't about telling yourself you can't spend. It's about knowing what you can spend, where your money is going and what you want it to do for you.
You can enjoy the coffee. 🛒

You can buy the shoes.
You can go out for dinner.
The point isn't to spend less just for the sake of spending less. It's to make sure today's spending still leaves room for tomorrow's plans.
