Markets Wrapped: 17 July 🇿🇦🌍

Markets took a breather this week as investors shifted their focus from AI to interest rates and inflation.

Here's what mattered:
- AI stocks pulled back after months of exceptional gains.
- Softer US inflation boosted hopes for future Fed rate cuts.
- All eyes are on next week's SARB rate decision.
- The SARB has remained more hawkish than many global central banks, reinforcing confidence in its commitment to a 3% inflation target.

Perspective matters:
- Markets don't move in straight lines.
- Central bank credibility remains a key strength for South Africa.
- Long-term investing means looking beyond the week's headlines.

https://danieldekock.substack.com/p/when-passive-investing-stops-being

“Rational markets” were never really about the absence of exuberance—they were about how quickly it got corrected.

That balance shifts when passive flows dominate.

In a system increasingly driven by index rules, rising valuations can lead to inclusion, inclusion drives forced buying, and forced buying can further reinforce valuations. The feedback loop doesn’t require sentiment—it’s mechanical.

That’s where the risk sits.

Passive investing has clear benefits: low cost, diversification, and discipline. But when trillions are allocated without regard to price, fundamentals, or conviction, the system can become less able to absorb narrative-driven excess.

What was once investor behaviour becomes market structure.
And in that structure, exuberance doesn’t just happen—it can persist longer than it should.

The upcoming AI IPO cycle, including companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, will be a real-time test of how strong those passive feedback loops have become.

Active investing isn’t perfect—but it does something passive systems can’t: it prices risk, disagreement, and conviction in real time.

For decades, passive investing has been sold as one of the safest and most rational ways to build wealth.

Markets Wrapped: 5 June 🇿🇦🌍

Global forces kept markets on edge this week.
- The Reserve Bank raised rates by 25 bps to 7%
- Oil prices and Middle East tensions lifted inflation risks
- The SARB cut growth forecasts, pointing to higher rates for longer
- The AI boom stayed in focus, with SpaceX’s upcoming IPO drawing attention at an estimated $1.75 trillion valuation
- Anthropic and OpenAI are also on watch as the next big private-to-public market stories

Perspective matters.
- Global events are driving local markets
- Oil, rates, and AI are doing most of the heavy lifting right now
- Volatility can still create long-term opportunity
- Global shocks move fast — disciplined investors stay focused on the bigger picture.
