🌱 What do farming, motherhood, and investing have in common?

They all answer to the Changing Environment Principle.

Think about it. Whether you are giving birth, planting crops, breeding livestock, or growing wealth, you are operating in a dynamic system where the seasons always change. In farming, you don't panic and dig up your seeds just because winter arrives. You trust the root system to endure the frost so you can reap the harvest in the summer.

Yet, when the financial markets hit a winter season (volatility and market dips), the temptation is to panic and try to "time the market" by jumping in and out.

Trying to outsmart the economic weather is a recipe for a stunted portfolio. Real wealth isn't built by timing the market; it’s built by time IN the market.

When you keep your investments firmly planted through changing seasons, you unlock three powerful forces:

The Miracle of Compounding: Your money creates returns, which turn around and breed more returns.

The Smooth-Out Effect: History shows that long-term growth trends consistently smooth out short-term market storms.

Emotional Peace: You stop stressing over daily market fluctuations and let time do the heavy lifting.

Growth takes time, and every fruit tree needs a gestation period. If the current market volatility has you feeling uneasy, remember: don't look at the daily wind—look at the long-term horizon.

Financial Wellness: Community Wealth and the Legacy You Build

You can have a beautiful product or an excellent service, but without people to sell to, it cannot generate income. “People buy you before they buy your product or service.” Your honesty, care and reliability help people trust you. Keeping your promises and meeting their needs strengthens that trust, encouraging repeat business and referrals.

Relationships connect community wealth to financial wellness. By solving problems, creating jobs and helping others develop their skills, you can earn an income while contributing to the wellbeing of your community.

That contribution becomes part of your life’s obituary. At your funeral, the most meaningful tributes will centre on how you touched people’s lives: the person you helped, the young person you mentored, the family supported through a job you created, or the customer you treated with dignity. While a balance sheet reflects your financial assets, but it can never measure the impact you have on others.

Build financial wealth through meaningful service, and build a legacy through the lives you improve. Long after your possessions change hands, people will remember how you made a difference.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS: WEALTH REQUIRES A PLAN

Napoleon Hill wrote in Think and Grow Rich:

“Poverty needs no plan. It needs no one to aid it, because it is bold and ruthless. Riches are shy and timid. They have to be ‘attracted.’”

This idea reminds us that financial difficulty can develop without deliberate planning, while financial wellness usually requires intention, discipline, and consistent effort.

Proverbs 21:5 captures this principle clearly: “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” This verse highlights that financial progress is generally the result of careful planning, patience, and consistent effort—not impulsive decisions or quick fixes.

To “attract” wealth does not simply mean thinking about money and expecting it to appear. It means developing the mindset, discipline, and habits that create opportunities for financial growth.

Financial wellness begins with making deliberate decisions to earn, budget, save, invest, and protect what we have built. It also involves strengthening our ability to generate income through multiple sources, continuously developing our skills, and avoiding financial decisions that repeatedly drain our resources.

A positive financial vision is important, but it must be supported by a clear plan and consistent action.

Think positively. Plan intentionally. Act consistently. Build wealth deliberately.

Wealth may be attracted by vision, but it is built through disciplined action.

Inheritance Benefits and Compensation: Build the Ability to Earn an Income

As a financial planner, many of the people I help with inheritance benefits and compensation are young adults who have not yet started families of their own. Many have never earned a steady income. When they receive a large sum of money, they may prioritise performing outstanding traditional ceremonies, buying a car or building a house in the village.

These things may matter deeply. However, I believe the first financial priority should be building the ability to earn an income. A once-off payment can pay for a house or a car, but it cannot cover living expenses forever. Without an income, a person may eventually have to borrow money to meet everyday needs.

Our beliefs influence how we use money. Deuteronomy 28:12 speaks of God blessing the work of our hands. Genesis 3:19 reminds us that earning our food is connected to work. I draw from these verses a principle of managing wisely what we have been given: when we receive a financial opportunity, we should consider how it can help us support ourselves through productive work. These scriptures do not promise that every investment or business will succeed.

An inheritance benefit or compensation payment can be compared to seed. If all the seed is consumed, nothing remains to plant. Before spending most of the money on traditional ceremonies, building or a car, a young person should consider how to gain skills, find work, start a carefully planned business or acquire something that could help generate income, according to their circumstances. If the compensation is intended to cover medical treatment, future care or lost income, those needs must come first in the plan.

The goal is more than owning things. It is to build the ability to earn and maintain a continuing income. After planning for essential needs and future costs, a person can decide how much they can afford to spend on the things they value.

Protect the seed first. Then develop the hands that will put it to work.

When an Income Dies but the Bills Remain

Financial lessons from 2 Kings 4:1

In 2 Kings 4:1, a widow tells Elisha that her husband has died and a creditor is coming to take her two sons because of an unpaid debt. The verse shows a family facing two losses at once: a loved one and financial security.

The passage does not tell us whether the husband had any means of protecting his family financially. Life cover is a modern solution we can consider when reflecting on the widow’s situation.

What is life cover?

Life cover is insurance that pays a specified benefit when the insured person dies, provided the policy’s terms are met. Its purpose is to give the people who depended on that person money to help replace lost income. It can help them pay for food, housing, education and other living costs while they adjust.

Credit life cover serves a different purpose: it is linked to a debt and can pay the covered outstanding balance after death. Once that debt is settled, it does not provide an ongoing income for the family.

What risks should a family plan for?

- Unpaid debts: Death does not automatically erase a person’s debts. In South Africa, debts are dealt with during the administration of the deceased estate before the remaining assets are distributed to heirs.
- Lost income: A surviving spouse may still have to meet the same monthly expenses with less money.
- Disrupted plans: School fees, housing and other goals can become difficult to fund.
- Too little cover: A policy may exist but still be insufficient for the family’s needs. ASISA’s insurance gap study found a substantial shortfall in life cover among South African income earners.

Practical steps to take now

1. List your debts and check for credit life cover on each account or loan.
2. Work out what your family would need to settle obligations and meet living expenses if your income stopped.
3. Review your life cover against that need, including any cover provided through your employer.
4. Keep beneficiary details current and make sure your family knows where to find your policy information.
5. Understand the policy before taking it out: check the premium, benefit amount, exclusions and claim requirements.

The widow’s story reminds us that financial planning is an act of care. We cannot prevent every loss, but we can prepare so that those who depend on us have support when they need it most.
