The rand is taking a bigger hit than most of its emerging-market peers as an energy crisis and Chinese growth concerns batter the South African currency and worsen the country’s inflation outlook.

The currency declined for a second day on Monday to its weakest level in more than a month as oil prices soared, while traders fretted over China’s growth hurdles and how that would affect prices of the raw materials that account for close to half of South Africa’s exports.

Everything ages, but not everything ages well. Some things can wither from the inside out if they do not have a well-developed resilience. Resilience is the ability to bounce back and withstand stressors. It is to have the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties.

For us, resilience is something that we need to work on actively. If we were lucky to have a loving environment to grow up in, we would have a certain amount of resilience from an early age. However, as soon as our communities begin to find ways to disqualify, exclude, challenge, and limit us, our resilience will be challenged and reduced.

This is why we need to work on our resilience.

A Happy Heritage Day to all! 🇿🇦

"Some of my life achievements have been to build and run a restaurant in the Karoo for a year and to climb Mount Aconcagua (6 960 mt's), Mount Kilimanjaro (5 896 mt's) and Mount Elbrus (5 642 mt's), with the goal of summiting the Seven Peaks the highest being Mt Everest (8 850 mt's).

I went from 138 to 79 kilograms in just 2 years, and in 4 years went from barely managing an eight-kilometer walk on Cape Town’s beachfront promenade to collecting medals for Iron Man South Africa, two Kalahari Extreme Marathons, and the Half Iron Man Western Australia competition. I was also selected to represent Western Province at the 2015 SA Duathlon Championships. Not bad for a bagpipe player with only 9 ½ fingers.

The moral of the story, anything is achievable with the right planning."

For example – I had to buy a new cellphone charger the other day, and there were two options – one was two-thirds the price of the other, but both were reasonably priced (according to my limited experience of buying chargers!).

I went with the more expensive one because the price tag convinced me that it would be the better choice. If I knew the industry, I would probably know that they were both made in the same factory in some far-off land – but the higher price convinced me of higher value.

You’d probably do the same. It’s the same with buying a car, paying for food at a restaurant, purchasing new shoes, and just about everything else that we pay for. Price skews our perception of value.

African Rainbow Capital Investments is planning to expand its portfolio and has entered negotiations to add a fintech conglomerate to the group.

The firm, controlled by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe through his Ubuntu-Botho Investments company, already owns branchless TymeBank and telecommunications business Rain, along with more diverse holdings spanning almost 50 companies.

It has now set aside as much as R350 million for its new investment, co-Chief Executive Officer Johan van der Merwe said in an interview.

The fintech conglomerate includes “one or two advanced businesses and there are a few startups,” he said. “It’s still in negotiations.”

ARC is also in talks to attract new investors for TymeBank, which launched in 2019 and is expected to break even next year, Van der Merwe said.

The bank recently acquired a license to launch operations in the Philippines and is exploring other Asian markets after JG Summit Holdings, one of the largest conglomerates in the country, invested in the business.

DUDU RAMELA: Momentum Metropolitan Holdings released its financial results for the year ending June 30, 2021. Operating profit was boosted by an increase in investment return of 80%, and an increase of 31% in total new business – at the same time recording high death claims, though. Normalized headline earnings were down 34%. Momentum declared a final ordinary dividend of 15 cents per ordinary share.
