πŸ’° Are you claiming all your real business expenses?

Many business owners pay more tax than necessary because valid business expenses are often missed, forgotten, or never properly recorded.

Before tax season arrives, it may be worth reviewing:

βœ… Software subscriptions

βœ… Bank charges and merchant fees

βœ… Phone, internet and office expenses

βœ… Accounting and professional fees

βœ… Insurance and other legitimate business costs

But there is another side to the story.

Claiming expenses is not about putting every payment through the books.

A valid claim should be:

βœ” Business-related

βœ” Properly supported

βœ” Correctly recorded

βœ” Able to withstand SARS scrutiny

Remember:

πŸ“Œ Valid claims save tax.

πŸ“Œ Poor claims create risk.

πŸ“Œ Missing records can turn a legitimate deduction into a SARS problem.

The goal is not to claim more.

The goal is to claim correctly.

I recently wrote an article on this topic which may help business owners review their current structure and tax position:

How are you taking money out of your business?

Salary?
Dividends?
Drawings?
Shareholder loan?
A bit of everything and hope for the best?

That last one is popular. Not always wise.

Owner remuneration should not be random.

The way you take money from your business can affect:

βœ… PAYE
βœ… company tax
βœ… personal tax
βœ… dividends tax
βœ… shareholder loans
βœ… cash flow
βœ… retirement planning

Salary and dividends are not the same thing. They have different tax implications, compliance requirements and cash-flow effects.

Before tax season, it is worth reviewing whether your current setup still makes sense.

🚨 SARS has officially announced the 2026 Tax Season dates.

If you receive an Auto Assessment from SARS, do not assume it is automatically correct.

SARS prepares these assessments using information received from employers, banks, medical schemes, retirement funds and other third parties.

Before accepting an Auto Assessment, check that:

βœ… All income has been included

βœ… Medical aid information is correct

βœ… Retirement contributions are reflected correctly

βœ… Investment income has been included

βœ… Rental income (if applicable) has been declared

βœ… Any allowable deductions have been considered

Remember: an Auto Assessment is a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing your tax affairs.

Many taxpayers simply accept the assessment and only discover errors later.

The 2026 filing season dates announced by SARS are:

πŸ“… Auto Assessments: 1 July – 12 July 2026

πŸ“… Individual taxpayers (non-provisional): 13 July – 23 October 2026

πŸ“… Provisional taxpayers: 13 July 2026 – 22 January 2027

Tax season is closer than many people think.

Now is a good time to make sure your records are complete, your supporting documents are available, and your tax affairs are up to date.

🚨 Tax season is coming. Are your books ready?

Most business owners do not get caught out because of SARS.

They get caught out because the bookkeeping was left too long.

Missing invoices.
Missing receipts.
VAT not reviewed.
Bank accounts not reconciled.
Payroll records needing attention.

Then tax season arrives... and the scramble begins.

The good news?

A few simple monthly checks can save a lot of stress, time and money.

In this quick reel, I cover some of the key areas every business owner should review before tax season arrives.

βœ… Bank statements
βœ… Invoices and receipts
βœ… VAT records
βœ… Payroll records
βœ… Asset documents
βœ… Tax planning

Remember:

Clean books give you control.

When your records are up to date, tax season becomes a review β€” not a rescue mission.

Tax season is coming β€” and it is not only about deductions and receipts.

It is also the right time to ask a bigger question:

Is your business structured to pay more tax than necessary?

Many business owners start with a structure that made sense years ago.

Maybe it was simple.
Maybe it was quick.
Maybe it worked when the business was smaller.

But as the business grows, that same structure may start creating unnecessary tax, admin problems, cash-flow pressure, or poor planning.

Your business structure should support your business β€” not quietly punish it.

I’ve written a practical article on this here:

https://smarteraccounting.co.za/is-your-business-structured-to-pay-more-tax-than-necessary/

If you are unsure whether your company, salary, dividends, shareholder loans or tax planning are set up properly, let’s take a proper look.

Provisional tax should not be a last-minute cash-flow shock.

Too many business owners only think about tax when the payment deadline arrives.

By then, the money has often already gone into stock, wages, suppliers, overheads or simply keeping the business moving.

That is when tax becomes painful.

A proper provisional tax review can help you:

βœ… Estimate your likely tax exposure
βœ… Avoid nasty surprises
βœ… Reduce the risk of penalties and interest
βœ… Set money aside gradually
βœ… Manage cash flow more sensibly

Good tax planning is always easier than last-minute tax scrambling.

I cover this and four other tax-saving checks in my latest article:

Tax season stress usually doesn’t start in tax season.

It starts months earlier:

β€’ Missing invoices
β€’ Expenses not captured
β€’ VAT not reviewed
β€’ Supporting documents not filed properly

One simple monthly habit can make a big difference:

Take a few minutes each month to review:

βœ” Income
βœ” Expenses
βœ” VAT
βœ” Payroll
βœ” Supporting documents

Then ask:

Are all expenses captured?
Are invoices and receipts saved?
Is enough money set aside for tax and VAT?

Clean records save time, reduce stress and avoid costly surprises.

When your books are current, tax season becomes a review β€” not a rescue mission.

Are you claiming all the real costs of running your business?

Many business owners pay more tax than necessary because legitimate expenses are missed, not recorded properly, or only picked up too late.

Typical business expenses may include:

β€’ Accounting fees
β€’ Software subscriptions
β€’ Insurance
β€’ Bank charges
β€’ Internet and phone costs
β€’ Office expenses
β€’ Repairs and maintenance
β€’ Marketing and advertising
β€’ Professional services

The key is simple:

If it is a genuine business cost, it should be reviewed properly and recorded correctly.

Of course, this does not mean throwing personal expenses into the books and calling them β€œbusiness strategy.” SARS has seen that movie before.

But many businesses go too far the other way and fail to claim what they are entitled to.

Tax season stress rarely appears overnight.

In most cases, the pressure starts building months earlier:

β€’ Missing invoices
β€’ Expenses not captured
β€’ VAT not reviewed
β€’ Supporting documents not filed properly
β€’ Payroll and tax records falling behind

One simple monthly habit can prevent a year-end scramble:

Take 15–20 minutes each month to review:

βœ” Income
βœ” Expenses
βœ” VAT
βœ” Payroll
βœ” Supporting documents

Then ask three questions:

1. Are all expenses captured?
2. Are invoices and receipts saved?
3. Is enough money being set aside for tax and VAT?

Clean records save time, reduce risk and improve decision-making.

When your books are current, tax season becomes a review β€” not a rescue mission.

No panic.
No guessing.
No searching through old emails at midnight.

🚨 Tax season panic usually doesn't start in tax season...

It starts months before.

A missing invoice here.
A lost receipt there.
VAT not checked.
Payroll not reviewed.
Suddenly tax season arrives and now you're digging through old emails at 11pm wondering:

"Where did I save that document?"

One monthly habit can stop all of that:

βœ” Check income
βœ” Review expenses
βœ” Review VAT and payroll
βœ” Save supporting documents
βœ” Set money aside for tax

Small monthly checks beat one giant rescue mission every time.

Need help getting your business tax-season ready?
