Women in Computer Science, UCT

Women in Computer Science, UCT Women in Computer Science is a UCT Society focused at encouraging women to pursue a degree in Computer Science. Mentors are NOT personal tutor.

4.

WCS aims to fulfil this goal by initiating four sub-programmes:

1. Socials: informal gathering of CS women (namely alumni, lectures, post and under grad students). The socials take place in an informal setting.

2. Formal Talks: These talks focus on work done by women but in research and industry. The purpose of these talks is to expose students to the different opportunities that Computer Scie

nce offers.

3. Mentors: Senior students will be assigned as mentors to junior students. It is important that the relationship between mentees and mentors be clearly defined. The mentor will serve as a support and encourage her mentee(s). Outreach: Encourage women to continue/join Computer Science. Outreach will be targeted at major decision making stages of a student’s carrier, namely: Third year, Honours and high school learners. We hope that by initiating the Women in Computer Science programme, more women will be encouraged to pursue this field of study. We hope that through this, WCS will play a part in helping to change the demographic of the Computer Science Department at UCT.

Breaktherules event highlights. Thank you to all our sponsors who took their Saturday morning to come for our annual event. Breaktherules is an annual event where members get meet society partners which are tech companies in South Africa. Benefits of attending you get to network and build connections with potential employers. Ask all those burning questions directly. Might score a grad or internship program while at it. If you lucky you get to walk away with a few goodies like merch or uber eats vouchers. If you missed it this year just attend the next one 😃. Thank you to our partner society for helping us collaborate in planning this event.
