If you're claiming out-of-pocket medical costs with SARS, keep these two crucial rules in mind:

Proof is essential: You must have both the original invoice and the proof of payment to validate deductions.

Avoid double-claiming: Ensure the expense isn't already accounted for on your medical scheme tax certificate.

Top Tip: Submit every out-of-pocket medical invoice to your medical aid throughout the year—even if you know they won't cover it. Getting those amounts reflected directly on your annual tax certificate makes filing smooth and audit-proof.

Most South Africans think medical tax credits are only for people with expensive medical aid plans. The truth? Even if you pay out-of-pocket for doctor visits and prescriptions, you might still qualify for a tax refund under Section 6B!

Here are 3 ground rules to remember before you file:

1️⃣ Over-the-counter vitamins don't count. Only doctor-prescribed medication qualifies.

2️⃣ Gap cover isn't medical aid. Premiums paid to gap cover or hospital cash plans cannot be claimed under tax credits.

3️⃣ Invoice ≠ Proof of Payment. SARS requires BOTH the medical invoice and proof you actually paid it (EFT/card receipt).
