It often begins subtly: a partner insisting on controlling the finances, questioning every purchase or excluding you from important financial decisions. At its core, financial abuse is the misuse or restriction of someone’s money or assets to limit their independence.

📍Warning signs may include:
• Someone demanding control over your salary, pension or grant
• Pressure to share financial information or co-sign a loan
• Being denied access to joint accounts
• Being excluded from financial decisions
• Loans or accounts being opened in your name without your knowledge

📍Protect your financial independence by:
• Maintaining your own bank account
• Keeping your passwords and PINs private
• Regularly monitoring your credit profile
• Never signing surety or financial documents without understanding the fine print
• Staying informed and involved in decisions affecting your finances

Financial abuse may be silent, but prevention is powerful. Financial control should remain where it belongs: in your own hands.
