7 in 10 South Africans die without a valid will.

Their estates are administered by the Master of the High Court under intestate succession rules that almost never reflect what the deceased actually wanted.

If you're one of the 3 in 10 who does have a will — when was it last updated?

If you're in the 70%, it's time.

We’ve been drafting, reviewing and administering wills and estates since 1973. A one-hour conversation will put the right plans in place for the people who matter most.

Three things most business owners get wrong on provisional tax.

1. Underestimating taxable income. Under-estimates attract penalties. Over-estimates attract interest. The middle ground requires a proper forecast — not a guess.

2. Missing the second-period deadline. The February IRP6 is where the tax liability actually gets settled. Miss it, and the consequences follow you into the next year.

3. Failing to reconcile with PAYE and other credits. Provisional tax is one leg of a multi-leg calculation. Without reconciliation, you almost always overpay or underpay.

Save this one — and speak to your tax team well before submission dates.

You built the business. Who's ready to run it when you're not?

Succession is the question most owner-managed businesses keep putting off — until it becomes the question they can no longer answer in time.

The right succession plan starts with asking the right questions:
→ When should succession planning actually start?
→ What tax implications should owners prepare for?
→ Is a family, external, or hybrid exit the best fit?
→ Where do trusts fit into the process — and where don’t they?
→ Why is succession a decade-long strategy, not a last-minute decision?

If you haven’t started, today is the earliest you can.

Speak to a director. Not a call centre.

At Marwick, the person who signs your work is the person who takes your call. Our senior directors don't delegate the first conversation — they prefer to have it themselves.

Whether it's a SARS query, an estate matter, an audit requirement or a question you haven't been able to get a clear answer to — book a consultation.

When it matters, you deserve the person who signs the work.

The SARS deadline nobody talks about.

The EMP501 bi-annual reconciliation is the one most businesses discover only when the penalty notice arrives.

It reconciles the PAYE, UIF and SDL you've paid across the period — and SARS will flag even small discrepancies.

Diarise:
→ 31 October — first reconciliation
→ 31 May — final reconciliation

A reconciled EMP501 takes an hour. A missed one can take months to undo.

If your payroll compliance needs a second set of eyes, we'll look at it.

Got a SARS verification letter?

Don't panic. Don't reply ad-hoc. Do these four things first.

1. Diarise the deadline. It's usually 21 business days. Miss it and you lose control of the conversation.
2. Don't reply ad-hoc. SARS correspondence sets precedent — a clumsy reply now is a dispute later.
3. Gather supporting docs. Statements, source documents, reconciliations — everything.
4. Call a specialist. Before you submit anything.

If SARS has reached out, so should you.

Our tax advisory team handles SARS correspondence end-to-end — from response to negotiation to closure.

Accountant vs Auditor?

There's a difference between an accountant and a Registered Auditor. If your business is growing, that difference matters.

An accountant prepares.
A Registered Auditor can sign.

Statutory audit opinions, independent reviews and compliance audits carry legal weight that only a Registered Auditor can deliver. Not every firm qualifies. Not every firm signs what Marwick signs.

If you're not sure whether your business requires an audit, a ten-minute conversation will clarify it.

Audit or Independent Review?

It's one of the most common questions business owners ask — and the answer determines your compliance obligations, your cost, and the weight your financials carry.

An independent review is limited assurance. Quicker. Less expensive. Appropriate for many smaller owner-managed businesses.

An audit is reasonable assurance. More rigorous. Legally required when your Public Interest Score crosses the threshold or when your MOI, funders or stakeholders require it.

The right one depends on your P*S, your company structure, and who's relying on the numbers.

Not sure which one you need? A ten-minute conversation with a Registered Auditor will clarify it.

What does an auditor actually do? (We get asked this more than you'd think.)

An audit is not about catching you out. It's about providing independent assurance — to you, your shareholders, your bank, and your stakeholders — that your financial statements are accurate and prepared in accordance with the relevant accounting standards.

Here's what the process actually involves:

Planning: We understand your business, assess risk, and design our audit approach accordingly.

Testing: We examine transactions, verify balances, test internal controls, and confirm that income, expenses, assets, and liabilities are correctly recorded.

Evaluation: We assess management judgements and accounting estimates — areas where errors most often occur.

Reporting: We issue a formal audit opinion on your financial statements. This opinion carries legal weight and professional responsibility.

Think of us as the independent quality check that every set of financials deserves.
