Three things most business owners get wrong on provisional tax.

1. Underestimating taxable income. Under-estimates attract penalties. Over-estimates attract interest. The middle ground requires a proper forecast — not a guess.

2. Missing the second-period deadline. The February IRP6 is where the tax liability actually gets settled. Miss it, and the consequences follow you into the next year.

3. Failing to reconcile with PAYE and other credits. Provisional tax is one leg of a multi-leg calculation. Without reconciliation, you almost always overpay or underpay.

The SARS deadline nobody talks about.

The EMP501 bi-annual reconciliation is the one most businesses discover only when the penalty notice arrives.

It reconciles the PAYE, UIF and SDL you've paid across the period — and SARS will flag even small discrepancies.

Diarise:
→ 31 October — first reconciliation
→ 31 May — final reconciliation

A reconciled EMP501 takes an hour. A missed one can take months to undo.

Got a SARS verification letter?

Don't panic. Don't reply ad-hoc. Do these four things first.

1. Diarise the deadline. It's usually 21 business days. Miss it and you lose control of the conversation.
2. Don't reply ad-hoc. SARS correspondence sets precedent — a clumsy reply now is a dispute later.
3. Gather supporting docs. Statements, source documents, reconciliations — everything.
