Last Friday, the MPVR Offshore team took a well-deserved break from the spreadsheets, audit files and deadlines to enjoy our annual mid-year team-building day. 🎉

The day kicked off with some fun office games before we swapped our desks for the padel courts at Durban Country Club. 🎾 For many of the team, it was their very first time playing padel, making the experience even more memorable. We then returned to the office to enjoy a fantastic braai, great food, delicious desserts and plenty of laughter with more than 25 team members and a few family members in attendance.

One of the highlights of the day was welcoming many of our remote colleagues, who travelled from across the country to join us. Spending time together away from our screens gave everyone the opportunity to strengthen friendships, build new connections and remind ourselves that while we may work in different locations, we are all part of one team.

At MPVR, we believe that investing in our people is just as important as serving our clients. We work hard, support one another through busy seasons and, every now and then, take the time to celebrate the incredible people who make our business what it is. 🤝

A huge thank you to every member of the MPVR family who attended and helped make the day such a success, as well as to the few family members who joined us and support our team behind the scenes. ❤️

🌍 VAT registration in the UK and South Africa follows two completely different sets of rules - and for businesses operating across both, that gap creates real risk.

The UK works on a compulsory registration threshold based on taxable turnover, with VAT return filing typically due quarterly. South Africa's system runs on its own threshold and rate structure, with different filing periods and its own rules on what counts as taxable supply. Get the wrong one confused for the other, and you either register too late and face penalties, or miss the input VAT you're entitled to claim back.

Our Head of Technical, Aradhna Maharaj, has put together a practical reference guide comparing IFRS for SMEs and FRS 102 - the two main accounting frameworks for smaller businesses.'-

The big difference? FRS 102 now puts lease obligations on the balance sheet. IFRS for SMEs doesn't. For businesses with significant property, vehicle or equipment leases, that changes what lenders see.

🚨 Tech Roundup: ICAEW Practice Assurance. AML. Cyber Security.

ICAEW's latest Practice Assurance Monitoring Report highlights a familiar challenge for many firms: compliance gaps continue to emerge in the same key areas year after year.

Money laundering regulations remain the most common area of non compliance, while engagement letters, client communication, clients' money regulations, and professional indemnity insurance continue to feature prominently in review findings.

The report also places a strong spotlight on cyber security. While most firms demonstrate strong technical controls, governance and supplier risk management remain areas requiring greater attention.

Looking ahead, ICAEW's 2026 focus areas will include Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation (PCRT) and working with vulnerable clients.

The message is clear: strong governance, proactive compliance, and effective risk management remain essential for firms operating in an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
