Same project. Same spend. Different balance sheets.

Both frameworks expense research, but development costs can tell a different story. IFRS requires capitalisation once six criteria are met, while US GAAP generally expenses R&D, with specific exceptions.

In this edition, our Head of Technical, Aradhna Maharaj, explores the key differences, from software development and acquired R&D to changes in internal-use software accounting.

One takeaway: timing matters. Under IAS 38, development costs expensed before the criteria are met cannot be added to the asset later.

📑 Tech Roundup | Provisions Compared: IAS 37 and ASC 450

ASC 450 and IAS 37 ask the same opening questions: is there an obligation from a past event, and can the amount be estimated? The split comes at the threshold and the range. IAS 37 recognises a provision once an outflow is more likely than not and books the mid-point of an equally likely range, while ASC 450 waits until a loss is likely to occur and books the minimum. On one legal claim, that is a 3.5m provision under IFRS against nothing but a note under US GAAP.

Keeping up with the latest local and international regulatory updates is extremely important in our business. In this edition, our Head of Technical, Aradhna Maharaj, unpacks the key differences between ASC 450 and IAS 37, covering what "probable" means under each, two worked examples on the same claim, the discounting and reimbursement rules where the gap runs the other way, and where the IASB's live project on IAS 37 now stands.

ASC 842 and IFRS 16 agree on what a lease is and put the right-of-use asset and lease liability on the balance sheet at the same amount. The split comes afterwards: IFRS 16 front-loads the expense, while an ASC 842 operating lease charges a single straight-line cost, with a knock-on effect on EBITDA.
