🚗 Travel reimbursements aren't always tax-free!

Before processing a travel claim, make sure you're checking more than just the kilometres travelled. 👀

Here's what payroll professionals need to know:

📍 Check the reimbursement rate against the SARS prescribed rate.
📋 Use the correct IRP5 source codes: 3702, 3703 and 3722.
🧾 Keep accurate logbooks and supporting records.

Getting the details right helps you apply the correct tax treatment and avoid payroll reporting errors.

📈 The Repo Rate has increased, and employers need to take note.

The SA Reserve Bank has increased the Repo Rate by 0.25%, bringing it to 7.25% from 23 September 2026. This is the first rate increase this year.

As a result:
• Prime Rate: 10.75%
• SARS Official Rate of Interest: 8.25% from 1 October 2026

👉 Why does this matter to employers?

If you provide employees with interest-free or low-interest loans, the difference between the interest actually paid and the SARS Official Rate of Interest may be taxable as a fringe benefit.

With the new rate taking effect, make sure your payroll records and fringe benefit calculations are updated accordingly.

Made a mistake? 😳 Don’t panic... but don’t ignore it!

Payroll errors happen. The important thing is knowing how to fix them correctly.

From underpayments and overpayments to incorrect PAYE/UIF deductions, SARS submissions and missed deadlines, the right correction depends on the type of error and when it was identified.

⚠️ And don’t forget: when correcting an IRP5 transaction, make sure you use the same IRP5 code as the original transaction.

The deduction is limited to 27.5% of the greater of remuneration or taxable income, subject to the applicable rules.

And there’s an important update: the annual monetary cap has increased from R350,000 to R430,000.

📌 Save this post for your payroll reference and make sure these numbers are on your radar when processing retirement fund contributions.
