The questions people apologise for asking us are almost always the useful ones.

"This is probably a silly question, but..." is how a lot of our conversations start. More often it's the thing that's been quietly sitting there for months, because it never felt big enough to bother anyone with.

Worth naming at the end of a month that's been heavy on compliance.

Small admin questions don't stay small by being ignored. They stay small by being answered. A registration that was started and never finished. A detail on file that stopped being accurate two addresses ago. A form nobody was sure applied. None of those are dramatic in the week they come up. All of them are easier to sort out now than a year from now.

You don't need to have a problem to ask a question.

If something's been sitting at the back of your mind, send it through.

Monday to Thursday until 17:00, Friday until 14:00.

31 August is the first provisional tax deadline for the 2027 tax year for individuals and other taxpayers whose year began on 1 March.

No countdown. No panic. Just a date worth having under control.

If your provisional tax is already sorted, good. If it isn't, there is still time to work through it properly rather than rushing through it at the last minute.

Before the deadline, three things are worth checking.

Are your figures current?
Your estimate should be based on what has actually happened in the business since March, not numbers that still need to be pieced together.

Does the estimate reflect the year you're having now?
Last year's figures are useful context, but they should not automatically become this year's answer. Your current income and expenses may be telling a different story.

Are you certain provisional tax applies to you?
Provisional taxpayer status is influenced by the type of income you receive, not simply how much you earn, and that status can change from one year to the next.

The correct next step will not be the same for everyone.

That is exactly why it helps to look at your actual numbers before the deadline rather than trying to solve the question with a general rule.

If something is still unclear, now is a good time to ask.

We're available Monday to Thursday until 17:00 and Friday until 14:00.

"When do I need to register for VAT?" had the same answer for 17 years. This year it changed.

From 1 April 2026 the compulsory VAT registration threshold moved from R1 million to R2.3 million in taxable supplies over any 12 months. The voluntary threshold moved from R50 000 to R120 000.

If you're growing towards R1 million, the pressure you were expecting isn't there any more. There's a good deal more room before registration becomes compulsory.

If you're already registered because you crossed the old R1 million line, you now have a choice you didn't have before. Nothing happens automatically. Staying registered is entirely fine. So is deregistering.

Which is better isn't obvious, and it isn't only about the tax. Some of your customers may prefer dealing with a VAT vendor. You'd stop claiming input tax on what you buy. And there's a VAT calculation that happens on the business assets and stock you still hold at the point you deregister.

So it's a real decision with real trade-offs, not an obvious win in either direction.

If your turnover sits between R120 000 and R2.3 million, this is worth working through rather than leaving as it is by default.

"Am I a provisional taxpayer?" is one of the most common questions we get, and one of the most commonly guessed at.

Most people assume it's about how much you earn.
It's mostly about where your income comes from.

Run a company? It's a provisional taxpayer.
Earn only a salary with PAYE deducted by a registered employer? Generally you aren't, because the tax is already being paid as you go.

Everyone in between is where it blurs. A side trade. Rental from a property. Interest and dividends. Work invoiced directly rather than through a payroll. For someone not carrying on a business there's a R30 000 threshold that matters here, and it's lower than most people expect.

Why it's worth knowing: the answer changes what August asks of you, and the same person can be a provisional taxpayer one year and not the next, purely because the income mix changed.

If you've been assuming rather than checking, ask. It's a short conversation.

Send this to someone who isn't sure which one they are.

More of your tax return arrives already filled in this year. That's a real improvement. It's also where a particular mistake starts.

SARS has expanded prefilled data for this filing season. Investment income and similar third-party information now lands on the form before you touch it. Less capturing, fewer typing errors, a faster process.

What prefilled means is: we already have this.

What it doesn't mean is: this is everything.

The gaps tend to sit in the same places every year. Income from a source that doesn't report to SARS. A rental property. Work invoiced directly rather than through a payroll. And on the other side, deductions nobody else knows about, because the only person who knows is you.

A return that looks complete and a return that is complete are two different things, and only one of them is your responsibility.

Worth ten minutes before you accept it: does this reflect your whole year, or only the part of it that reports itself?

Send this to someone who's about to hit submit.

A provisional tax estimate isn't a form. It's a forecast.

A form gets filled in.
A forecast gets thought about.

Provisional tax isn't a separate tax at all. It's the same income tax you'd owe anyway, paid in instalments across the year rather than as one amount at the end. The estimate is simply how the size of those instalments gets decided.

Which is why the number you put down does real work. Estimate too low and the shortfall doesn't disappear, it arrives later. Estimate too high and you've handed over money that could have been working in your business.

Both usually come from copying last year's figure across.

If you're not sure your estimate reflects the year you're actually having, that's a better conversation to have this week than in the last week of the month.

August looks quiet on most business calendars. For provisional taxpayers, it isn't.

The first provisional period for this tax year closes at the end of the month. That's the point where an estimate of your full-year taxable income gets submitted, halfway through the year it describes.

None of that has to be stressful. It really asks 3 things:

That your figures from March onwards are up to date.
That someone has thought about what the rest of the year is likely to do.
That you know whether you're a provisional taxpayer at all, because plenty of people aren't sure.

Not one of those is a last-week job.

We'll be posting through August on what the estimate is actually for, who it applies to, and where turnover tax fits in. If you'd rather just ask, we're here Monday to Thursday until 17:00 and Friday until 14:00.

Financial records come in 2 kinds: the ones you file, and the ones you use. Only one of them is any help in July. Both matter. But filing records answer questions after the year has closed, when there's nothing left to change.

Monthly accounting records and management accounts do the other job. They show you what's happening while you can still act on it.

It doesn't have to mean more paperwork. Usually it's the same information, organised so you can read it.

A question worth sitting with: if you had to make a decision about your business this week, would your current records help you make it?

There’s no single national CIPC deadline. Your filing period follows your entity’s registration anniversary. Your beneficial ownership declaration must also be submitted and up to date when your annual return is filed.

That means every business works according to its own anniversary period, which makes the deadline surprisingly easy to miss.

If you're not sure what applies to your business, we can look at it with you.

Every July we get the same question: SARS sent me a message. Do I need to do anything?

Between 1 and 12 July, SARS sends auto-assessment notices by SMS and email. If you got one, open it and check that it matches your year. It's SARS's own calculation from the data they already hold.

If nothing came by 12 July, you file your own return, and filing season is open from 13 July.

If you'd like us to check what applies to you, we're one message away.
