In South Africa, certain essential food items are zero-rated for VAT, meaning you pay 0% VAT on qualifying products!

Here are a few examples:

🍞 Bread & Grains: Brown bread, maize meal, rice and samp.

🥦 Fruit & Vegetables: Fresh fruit, vegetables, dried beans and lentils.

🥛 Dairy & Eggs: Plain milk, maas and hen's eggs.

🐟 Other Essentials: Canned pilchards and vegetable cooking oil (excluding olive oil).

⛽ Beyond Groceries: Petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin also qualify for zero-rating or special VAT treatment.

Remember: Not every product in these categories qualifies. The exact product and applicable VAT rules matter!

🦺 COIDA: The Safety Net Behind the Workplace

We often talk about workplace safety as preventing accidents. But what happens after a work-related injury or occupational disease occurs?

That’s where COIDA — the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act — comes into the picture.

In simple terms, COIDA provides a compensation framework for employees who suffer qualifying occupational injuries or diseases. It operates on a no-fault basis, meaning an employee generally does not have to prove that their employer caused the incident in order to claim compensation.

The system can provide benefits relating to medical costs, temporary or permanent disablement, and qualifying fatal occupational injuries or diseases through the Compensation Fund.

For employers, however, COIDA also comes with important responsibilities — including registration, annual Return of Earnings submissions and maintaining good standing.
