The stories we tell ourselves shape everything in our relationships, our decisions, and our money.
Over the holidays, my daughter told me I sounded angry when asking my children for help. I immediately got defensive. Later, I reflected.
The real issue wasn’t them. It was the story I was telling myself, that I am alone, unsupported. That my needs don’t matter.
That same kind of story shows up in how I manage money. As a Karoo farmer’s daughter, I grew up with scarcity, uncertainty, and the ever-impending calamity. Those experiences became money stories. Money is scarce. Disaster is imminent. Worry is normal.
Unexamined stories can cost you dearly in your relationships, your decisions, and your peace of mind.
What stories are you telling yourself and what are they costing you?
