“SARS PAID ME!”

Whoop whoop every tax season, someone posts this like they won the lottery.

Here’s the truth, a sars refund isn’t a prize. It’s your own money, coming home.

All it means is you paid too much tax during the year — and SARS held onto the excess, interest-free, until your assessment caught up.

So if your friend gets R8'240 back and you get zero, they’re not winning but You didn’t lose.

Refunds usually happen because:

➡️Your RA contributions weren’t fully accounted for in payroll
➡️Other deductions or credits reduced what you actually owed
➡️Your employer over-deducted PAYE likely using an outdated payroll system

If your PAYE was spot-on all year and every deduction was already factored in? Zero refund is a good sign — it means the system worked.
