Background

The Kgetleng rivier Local Municipality (NW374) is located in the Southeastern part of North West Province and forms part o

f Bojanala Platinum District Municipality (DC37), bordering Rustenburg Local Municipality on the west Ventersdorp Local Municipality (which falls under the Southern District Municipality) on the south, Ditsobotla Local municipality on the east, Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality (which falls on the Central District Municipality) on the north east as well as Moses Kotane on the north side. The Northern portion of the area is situated on one of the main SDI’s identified by National Government (Department of Trade and Industry in co-operation with the Department of Transport). It forms part of an explicit spatial programme aiming to unlock the inherent and under utilized economic development potential of specific spatial locations in South Africa.

The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) of Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality invites all residents, community stakeholders, businesses, ward committees, and interested parties to attend the Public Participation Engagement on the 2024/2025 Annual Report.

The purpose of the engagement is to provide the community with an opportunity to consider the Municipality's 2024/2025 Annual Report and to submit comments, inputs, and recommendations to the MPAC as part of its oversight responsibilities.

MAYOR'S REMARKS | OFFICIAL INTRODUCTION OF THE CONTRACTOR AND SOD-TURNING CEREMONY FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE R509 (SWARTRUGGENS TO MAGALIESBURG)

Today marked a historic milestone for the people of Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality and the greater Bojanala Platinum District as we joined the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Hon. Sempe Elizabeth Mokua, together Chief Whip Cllr Kagiso Selaolane, Speaker Cllr Mamiky Molefe, with Kgosi, Mathope, Councillors from Bojanala Platinum District Municipality and Rustenburg Local Municipality, to officially introduce MCIVILS as the appointed contractor for the rehabilitation of the 79.5 km R509 road from Swartruggens to Magaliesburg.

As the Mayor of Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality, I welcome this long-awaited investment in our road infrastructure. This is more than just the construction of a road—it is an investment in the future of our communities, our local economy, and the people we serve.

The rehabilitation of this strategic route will improve the movement of people, goods, and services between municipalities, making our region more accessible and attractive for investment. The R509 serves as an important economic corridor, and its upgrade will unlock new opportunities for business development, tourism, agriculture, and trade.

This project also brings renewed hope for our people through the creation of employment opportunities and the participation of local businesses, SMMEs, and emerging contractors. It is our expectation that local communities will benefit meaningfully from this development through job creation, skills development, and enterprise opportunities.

The R509 is a critical link connecting Kgetlengrivier, Bojanala Platinum District, and neighbouring municipalities. Its rehabilitation will strengthen regional integration and position our municipality as an important economic and business hub within the North West Province.

On behalf of the people of Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality, I wish to express our sincere appreciation to the North West Provincial Government, led by MEC Hon. Sempe Elizabeth Mokua, for responding to the needs of our communities through this landmark infrastructure investment.

We look forward to working closely with MCIVILS and all stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of this project, for the benefit of current and future generations.

District Energy Council Launched in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality

The Office of the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy today officially launched the District Energy Council (DEC) for the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

The DEC brings together representatives from the local municipalities within the district to strengthen collaboration and coordination on energy-related matters.

Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality reaffirmed its commitment to actively participate in the DEC across its key areas of focus, including electricity generation, transmission, distribution, maintenance, and revenue management and billing.

Welcoming the establishment of the DEC, Acting Mayor, Councillor Kagiso Selaolane, described the initiative as an important milestone for the district.

"As a developmental municipality, we see this platform not only as a mechanism for managing challenges, but also as an enabler of opportunity. Reliable energy unlocks local economic development, supports our renewable energy and mineral beneficiation ambitions, and gives confidence to investors and businesses on whom our communities depend," said Councillor Selaolane in his message of support.

The launch of the District Energy Council marks a significant step towards strengthening energy governance, improving collaboration among municipalities and stakeholders, and advancing reliable and sustainable electricity services across the Bojanala Platinum District.

Strengthening the District Development Model (DDM) and fostering effective intergovernmental relations within the Bojanala Platinum District. The DEC will work hand in hand with the Department of Electricity and Energy including Eskom.

MAYORAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATION PROMOTES HEALTHY LIVING AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality, led by the Honourable Mayor, today hosted a successful Mayoral Youth Day Celebration aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, youth development, and social cohesion among young people.

The event commenced with a health walk from the municipal offices to Reagile Stadium, where participants engaged in an aerobics session to encourage physical fitness and wellness. The Department of Health also delivered an informative health awareness talk, educating young people on the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and making responsible life choices.

Following the health and wellness programme, the sporting tournament officially got underway, with soccer teams taking to the field in a spirit of competition, unity, and youth empowerment.

The municipality extends its appreciation to all stakeholders, participants, community members, and government departments who contributed to the success of the event. Youth Day remains an important opportunity to honour the sacrifices of the youth of 1976 while inspiring today's generation to become active participants in building a better future.

KGETLENGRIVIER LOCAL MUNICIPALITY COMMEMORATES YOUTH MONTH 2026 UNDER THE THEME: "BRIDGING GENERATIONS: THE RESILIENCE OF 1976 AND THE MISSION OF 2026"

KGETLENGRIVIER, 5 JUNE 2026 – Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality today officially launched its Youth Month Programme, bringing together young people, government departments, stakeholders, and community leaders to commemorate the legacy of the 1976 youth while empowering the youth of today through skills development and economic opportunities.

Addressing the gathering, the Executive Mayor reflected on the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 1976, who stood against oppression and fought for a democratic South Africa. The Mayor emphasized that while the challenges facing young people have changed over the past fifty years, the responsibility to shape the future remains firmly in the hands of the youth.

"The youth of 1976 fought for political freedom. The youth of 2026 must lead the struggle for economic empowerment through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and innovation," said the Mayor.

As part of the municipality's commitment to youth development, the Mayor highlighted several programmes being implemented in partnership with various government departments and stakeholders. These initiatives are equipping young people with practical skills in road construction, farming and agricultural development, and plumbing, creating pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Mayor further welcomed participants enrolled in municipal and partner programmes, including initiatives supported by the Department of Employment and Labour, COGTA, DFFE, and BCEI, aimed at addressing youth unemployment and promoting economic participation.

The municipality also reaffirmed its commitment to the DFFF Programme, which currently benefits 300 participants and will continue until March 2027, providing valuable opportunities for skills development and income generation.

In a call to action, the Mayor encouraged young people to seize every available opportunity, acquire skills, pursue entrepreneurship, and become active contributors to local economic growth.

"The greatest tribute we can pay to the youth of 1976 is to build on their legacy by creating stronger communities, stronger families, and a stronger South Africa," the Mayor said.

Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that young people are empowered, supported, and equipped to participate meaningfully in the economy and the development of their communities.
