Did you know your medical aid can reduce the tax you pay?

SARS gives qualifying taxpayers a medical scheme fees tax credit. For the 2026/2027 tax year, the credit is:

R376 per month for you.
R376 per month for your first dependent.
R254 per month for each additional dependent.

If your medical aid is paid through your employer, this may reduce your monthly PAYE. If you pay it yourself, you may claim the credit when submitting your tax return.

SARS is no longer operating in the dark when it comes to South Africans living abroad.

With the Automatic Exchange of Information framework now fully operational and financial data being shared across more than 100 jurisdictions, SARS has significantly strengthened its ability to identify offshore income, assets, and financial activity linked to South African taxpayers.

Under South African tax law, living abroad does not automatically change your tax residency status. Without formally ceasing tax residency, you may still be regarded as a South African tax resident, with exposure to worldwide taxation and potential Exit Tax implications depending on your asset profile and timing.

The diesel rebate (diesel refund) tariff is mainly linked to the refundable portions of the General Fuel Levy (GFL) and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy built into the diesel price. The April 2026 tariff changed because government temporarily reduced the fuel levy to soften the impact of sharply rising fuel prices.

For April 2026, the government reduced the diesel General Fuel Levy by R3.00/litre, lowering the levy from the normal R3.93/litre to R0.93/litre.

Because the diesel refund tariff is calculated from the levies actually paid at the pump, the refundable amount became smaller in April. In simple terms:

Diesel rebate tariff = refundable GFL + refundable RAF levy

Since the GFL portion was temporarily cut by R3.00/litre, there was less levy available to refund, so the tariff dropped.

That is why the April 2026 diesel rebate tariff is lower than March 2026:

March 2026 used the normal levy structure (full diesel GFL in place).
April 2026 used the reduced levy structure after Treasury’s temporary relief intervention.

There was another adjustment in May 2026:

Treasury then reduced the diesel GFL even further to 0 cents/litre, and the diesel refund provisions were amended again.

Separately from the tariff itself, SARS also introduced a major diesel refund system change from 1 April 2026:

qualifying on-land farming, forestry and mining users can now claim on 100% of eligible diesel usage instead of 80%.

So:

the rebate rate per litre decreased because the levy embedded in diesel was reduced;
but some users may still see a larger overall claim because the eligible percentage increased from 80% to 100%.
