WHY MUST I REGISTER FOR INCOME TAX?

If your earnings for a given tax year are above the tax threshold, you are obliged by law to register for income tax. You must register for income tax, if you are an individual:

- Younger than 65years and earned more than R R67 111
- 65 years and older and earned R104 611
- The amount increases to R117 111 if you are older than 75years.

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) will pay particular attention this season on medical aid claims, retirement fund contributions, income protection policy contributions and taxpayers who submit revised returns for previous years.

"We are doing this deliberately. We are telling you up front. We don't want to catch you out. We're saying don't go there."

This is according to acting Sars commissioner Ivan Pillay.

TAX SEASON OPENS 01 JULY 2014.

The following documents are required to complete your tax returns:
- IRP5
- Certificates you received for local interest income earned
- Medical aid certificate
- Retirement annuity fund certificate
- A logbook (if the travel allowance is part of your remuneration).
- Any other documentation relating to income received, such as business or investment income, etc.
