SARS TAX SEASON: Do’s & Don’ts to Save Your Sanity (and Wallet!) 🇿🇦
Tax season is officially here, Mzansi! Whether you love it or dread it, making a simple mistake can delay your refund for months or land you with an unwanted audit penalty.
Before you log into eFiling or the MobiApp, run through this quick checklist:
❌ DON’T just auto-accept: Between 1 July and 12 July, millions will get auto-assessments. Check them carefully! If they missed your side hustle income or valid deductions, you need to edit it before accepting.
✅ DO check your banking details: If you've changed banks since last year, fix it on eFiling immediately. Outdated information is the number one reason refunds bounce.
❌ DON’T guess or estimate: SARS pre-files a lot of data from your employer, medical aid, and banks. If your inputs don't match their third-party data, your return will be flagged for verification.
✅ DO note your deadlines: Non-provisional taxpayers (normal salaried earners) have until 23 October 2026 to file. Provisional taxpayers have until 22 January 2027. Don't leave it to the final week!
Keep an eye out for scams, too—the real SARS will never send you a link via text or WhatsApp to claim a refund! 🛑
