Leadership is not about welding authority or creating an environment of fear; it’s all about empowering people and empowering your team to become the very best version of themselves. Unfortunately, too many people make the mistake of thinking that leadership is all about having power over people. They believe their title gives them the power to force certain behaviors from their team.

Leadership has nothing to do with having power over someone; it’s about using your influence to inspire and empower your people to achieve the impossible. This perception that leadership is about leading by force is dead, and if you still have this thinking, you will not attract the best people to your business.

Our workforce has changed, and as such, our thinking about work and leadership must change to give our organization any chance of survival in this very competitive world. When you understand that leadership is all about people and using your influence to inspire, empower, and motivate your team to become the very best, your organization will become one of the best in the world.

After arriving at the office at 8:30 am, I was dragged into a meeting with a very distressed colleague who wanted to speak to me immediately at 8:35. She was the Test Manager, and this was a new role for her, but having been the Test Manager myself previously, I was sure that whatever the issue, we would be able to deal with it.

As we sat down in the room, the Test Manager looked at me and said, “I have a lump in my breast, I think it’s cancer, and I don’t know what to do,” and then burst into tears. After freezing for a couple of seconds, I tried my best to comfort her, indicating everything would be all right.

Reading this story from Gordon Tredgold’s article 7 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Became a Leader, it touched my inner core. When someone can share such sensitive and personal information with someone, it shows that the leader cares about their team and creates an environment of trust where everyone can be themselves at work.

Great leaders have a genuine interest in others. They have a desire to build a relationship with their team, to know the people working with them, and to encourage everyone on their team to be the best they can be.

You can only grow as a leader if you embrace new challenges, face your fears, overcome something difficult, or do something you're never done before. Great leaders are comfortable with things going wrong sometimes because everything will not always go according to plan.

Unfortunately, people who call themselves leaders adopt a very negative mindset when they find themselves in these situations and, in the process, blame everyone and everything for the world of problems in their lives or in their organization.

It's tough, I know, but that's what being a leader is all about, and that's why leadership is not for the faint at heart. Your leadership is tested in a crisis, and you can immediately deduce what kind of leader you are when you are faced with challenging situations that stretch you to think beyond your comfort zone.

To become one of the greats of leadership, you must get comfortable with being very uncomfortable at times to continue your growth toward great leadership because, in many instances, the best things in life are often found outside your comfort zone.
