A lot of you are worried about your pension funds or retirement funding with the ANC now wanting to move to prescribed assets. I want to tell you not to worry too much about that for now. The reason for this is, even if they manage to change legislation, which I highly doubt with the unions pushing back, the prescribed assets will only be for future contributions. I say keep investing in your retirement annuity and pension funds and we will cross the bridge when it comes to really prescribing assets from the government's side. If you stop now and move off-shore with your investments you won't be able to receive the tax benefits that make retirement investing attractive to us. Should prescribed assets never realise, you would've paid the taxes on your withdrawal to move the funds, as well as not receive the tax benefits on your contributions. Work with a trusted advisor that keeps your emotions in check regarding investments.

Great read, this article highlights the importance of not reading too much into short term successes or losses. When it comes to investing, we need to trust the process as well as aim for consistency rather than one great year or quarter. I highly recommend speaking to a trusted financial planner to advise you before making investment decisions that might affect your wealth in the long term. Just as in sport, if you come of a successful trade which made a good return for you, we become confident and take unnecessary risks. This is one of the top reasons, when looking at funds, why I believe the fund mandate, fund objectives and investment philosophy is more important than past performance. We all know that past performance is no indicator for future performance.

I do believe that the investment strategy and the reason for including and excluding certain companies and industries in a fund will give us an idea of how the fund might perform.

Even though I believe that some of the companies that were excluded present great opportunities for investors, I really think Marriot or rather the specific fund managers got this one spot on. The reasons for excluding these companies makes perfect sense, they did not fit the philosophy of the fund.
