Medical aid, medical insurance and gap cover often get lumped together, but choosing between them isn’t really an either/or decision.

You may need one, or a combination may make sense for you. It depends on your healthcare needs, your budget and, importantly, the cover you already have.

The best place to start is to understand what you’re currently paying for and where you could still be left with costs of your own.

Is your home insurance ready for the next season? 🏠

Each season can reveal problems you may not have noticed before, from leaking roofs and damaged pipes to ageing geysers. But it's not just your home that may need a check-up. Your insurance cover deserves a review too.

In our latest article, Stephanie Swanepoel looks at what homeowners should consider as the seasons change, including home maintenance, geyser and pipe damage, policy cover and whether your insured values still reflect current rebuilding costs.

Working in a hospital, medical practice, or healthcare facility does not automatically mean you are covered for medical malpractice claims under their insurance.

Your cover depends on your relationship with the practice and the specific insurance arrangements in place. If you are unsure, obtain written confirmation of whether you are covered and to what extent.

If gaps exist, you may need your own medical malpractice indemnity insurance. Understanding your cover before a complaint or claim arises can prevent costly surprises and ensure you have the protection you need when it matters most.

Good financial planning doesn’t always look like a big financial move.

Sometimes it’s finally increasing that retirement contribution you’ve been meaning to increase, putting a bit extra into your bond when you can, or making sure your beneficiaries are still correct.

They’re fairly ordinary things, but doing them consistently can put you in a very different financial position over time.

A business can insure more than its building and a few company cars. Depending on how you operate, your risk plan may include:

1️⃣ Business interruption cover, which can help replace insured lost income or gross profit after a covered interruption.

2️⃣ Professional indemnity, for eligible claims arising from professional errors, omissions or advice.

3️⃣ Event insurance, where relevant, for specified risks linked to conferences, functions and other events.

4️⃣ Commercial property and asset cover, for insured buildings, equipment, stock and other business property.

5️⃣ Fleet insurance, which can cover multiple business vehicles under one policy and may include options such as accident damage, theft and third-party liability, depending on the cover selected.

6️⃣ And even, group employee benefits, such as medical aid, life, disability and funeral benefits for staff.

The right mix depends on how the business actually runs. A company with a large vehicle fleet will face different risks to a consultancy, a retailer or a professional practice, so it is worth checking your cover against the risks you deal with every day rather than assuming everything is already taken care of.

They often get spoken about as though they’re basically the same thing, but medical aid, medical insurance and gap cover are actually there for different reasons.

That’s where a lot of the confusion starts. Someone can have medical aid and still face a shortfall. Someone else may have medical insurance and assume it works like a medical scheme when it doesn’t.

The useful part is understanding what each one is designed to do, where the limits are and how the different pieces fit together for you.

A concert, conference or product launch can have a lot of money tied up in one date. That is exactly why event insurance is worth looking at before contracts are signed and deposits are paid.

Depending on the policy, cover may be available for risks such as cancellation or postponement, public liability, property or equipment, and other specified losses. Weather-related events, supplier problems and other causes are not automatically covered, so the wording matters.

If you are planning a significant event, ask what could cause the biggest financial loss and then check whether the policy actually addresses it. Even better, speak to a financial advisor at securitasfinancialgroup.co.za/find-an-advisor/

When a client is paying for your expertise, they’re also relying on you to get it right.

That could mean an auditor preparing financial statements, an architect drawing up plans, an engineer making technical recommendations, or a consultant giving specialist advice. In each case, the client is making decisions or taking action based on professional expertise.

If people rely on your professional judgement or specialist expertise as part of the service you provide, it’s worth finding out whether professional indemnity cover belongs in your business insurance plan.

If there’s still a Green ID book in your drawer, its days are numbered. In his speech on 1 October, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber confirmed that printing stops on 31 March 2027, and from 31 March 2028 the green book won’t count as valid identification at all.

That sounds like a Home Affairs problem, but it impacts your financial life too.

You need a valid ID to open an investment or update your cover, and if you ever have to claim as a beneficiary after a loved one passes away, the last thing you want is to be held up by an expired document.

Switching to a Smart ID is a lot less painful than it used to be. You can walk into one of more than 500 participating bank branches without an appointment and be done in minutes. It’s free if you’re over 60 or applying for the first time.

The Minister also shared plans for a Digital ID on your smartphone and passport applications at your local bank branch. You can read the full speech here 👉 https://www.gov.za/news/speeches/minister-leon-schreiber-home-affairs-quantum-leap-vision-future-government-01-oct

This is just a friendly reminder from us to you:

If you are a non-provisional individual taxpayer who needs to submit a 2026 income-tax return, the SARS filing deadline is only 10 days from now.

If yours is still outstanding, now is a good time to get it sorted rather than leaving it to the last day.
