Know your Investment Costs.

Here are 2 scenario's.

Client 1 is 35 years old starts a new Retirement Annuity with R3,000 a month saving in a Retirement Annuity. He is not aware of the costs in the RA and his Effective Annual Cost on the RA is 3.7%.

Client 2 is also 35 years old with the exact same contribution BUT his Effective Annual Cost on his RA is 2.0%

This is a saving of 1.7% per annum.

Lets assume both the RA's perform @ 13% before fees. Client's contribution increases by 5% p/a.

Both clients will have contributed R2,391,798 over the 30 year period.

Client 1 with the higher cost will retire with R8,45million
Client 2 with the lower cost will retire with R11,05million

By saving the 1.7% on fees p/a, client 2 will retire with R2,6million more than client 1. 30% more. This means client 2 will retire with 30% more income in retirement by just taking the time to know and limit the fees in their RA.

Know your fees, this is the silent killer to any Retirement plan.

As we step into 2026, many clients feel overwhelmed by their complex financial situations, what the financial markets will do, and how to get their finances in order. My advice? Strip away the noise and focus on these five core pillars.

1. Audit your budget ✅:
Identify where you can be spending too much. These can be subscriptions you pay for that you rarely use or don't use at all, paying too much for insurance premiums that have not been reviewed which can be easily rectified.
This is an easy way to save an extra R1,000+ per month

2. Save before spending 💵;
Most people save "what is left" at the end of the month. Usually, there is nothing left. Save as soon as you get paid.
Adopt the "If you don't see it, you cant spend it" mentality

3. Know your financial health 😷:
Just as you would know your personal health, know your financial health. You would not let a problem with your health go untreated, why do it with your finances?
Identify financial issues such as debt or irregular expenses and rectify them.
Start by clearing out debt with either the snowball effect (Smallest amounts first to give you sense of achievement and motivate you further) or with Avalanche method (Highest Interest Rates first which will save the most money)

4. Protect against the unforeseen 🔒:
Life Happens. Are you insured or do you have emergency savings to fall back on should something go terribly wrong?
Know your shortfalls, speak to a Financial Advisor to assist with insurance and emergency savings vehicles that outperform inflation

5. Simplify your Financial situation 🔍:
Complexity is the greatest enemy of ex*****on. Make sure you simplify your finances so that YOU fully understand them.
