What is meant by T-day?
Government’s proposed retirement reforms are aimed at promoting a culture of savings and ensuring that Retirement Fund members have better protection and enough money to retire comfortably. These reforms include enhanced tax relief on contributions to Retirement Funds, an alignment of different types of Retirement Funds as well as greater portability between Retirement Funds.
These tax changes were introduced by amendments to the Income Tax Act and come into effect on 1 March 2016. This date is generally referred to as “T-day”.
National Treasury confirmed that while the broader retirement tax reform changes came into effect on 1 March 2016, certain of the changes are postponed to 1 March 2019.
What is P-day?
And how does it differ from T-day?
P-day is a date to be determined in the future when compulsory preservation of retirement benefits will be introduced. These policy proposals are still under consideration and National Treasury (NT) is still consulting with the industry on these proposed changes. P-day changes have not been agreed and have not been written into law.
