📌 Provisional Tax in South Africa – Made Simple

Provisional tax isn’t a separate tax. It’s simply a way to pay your income tax in advance, instead of one large amount at the end of the tax year.

👤 Who must pay it?

You’re a provisional taxpayer if:
• You run a business
• You’re self-employed or freelance
• You earn rental income, investment income, or other income outside of salary

(All companies automatically fall into this category.)

📅 When is it due?

If your tax year ends in February:
• 1st payment – end of August
• 2nd payment – end of February

⚠️ Why it’s important

If you underestimate your income, SARS can charge:
• 20% penalty on underpaid tax
• 10% late payment penalty
• Interest on outstanding amounts

💡 Key tip
