A valid tax invoice is essential when claiming VAT on business expenses.

Before claiming VAT, make sure your invoices include:

✅ The words “Tax Invoice”, “VAT Invoice” or “Invoice”. (Not quote nor pro-forma)

✅ The supplier’s registered name, address and VAT number.

✅ Your business name, address and VAT number (where required).

✅ A unique invoice number and date.

✅ A clear description of the goods or services supplied.

✅ Quantities, where applicable.

✅ The correct VAT amount and invoice total.

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:

For invoices of R5,000 or less, simplified tax invoice requirements may apply.

Our advice: Always check your supplier invoices when you receive them. If information is missing or incorrect, request an amended invoice immediately.

Providing your accountant with correct and SARS-compliant tax invoices from the start can help prevent unnecessary delays, additional queries and potential VAT disallowances.

Remember, an expense being business-related does not automatically mean the VAT is claimable!
