South Africa's latest Mini-Budget points to a fiscal position that is stabilising, but remains under significant pressure.

Economic growth for 2026 has been revised down to 1.2%, while the debt-to-GDP ratio has stabilised at 78.4%. At the same time, stronger-than-expected revenue collections have provided some breathing room, with tax and non-tax revenue and National Revenue Fund receipts coming in R54.1 billion above the 2026 Budget estimate.

There is some short-term relief too. Fuel levy reductions are set to provide temporary support to consumers, while government continues to contend with higher debt-service costs, increased borrowing requirements and pressure on expenditure.

Payroll discrepancies are easier to deal with when you spot them early.

With the interim EMP501 reconciliation due 31 October 2026, employers have an opportunity to identify and address mismatches before the annual reconciliation period.

Check that your PAYE, UIF and SDL records reconcile with your payroll information, EMP201 declarations and payments. It is also a good time to review employee tax information and certificates for potential discrepancies.

A little extra attention now can mean less pressure when year-end comes around.
