🚨 JUST IN: South Africa's Richest Billionaire Now Controls Around 50 Private Hospitals
South African billionaire Johann Rupert has officially taken full control of Mediclinic International's Southern African business, marking one of the biggest healthcare deals in the country's recent history.
Here's what happened:
Rupert's investment company, Remgro, has completed a R15.6 billion transaction to acquire 100% ownership of Mediclinic International's Southern African operations.
The deal was approved by South Africa's Competition Tribunal after being announced in late 2025.
As part of the agreement, Remgro now owns:
• Around 50 private hospitals across South Africa and Namibia.
• 15 day clinics.
• 6 sub-acute facilities.
• 6 mental health facilities.
• More than 8,900 hospital beds.
• Intercare, one of South Africa's largest primary healthcare groups.
• ER24, a leading private emergency medical services provider.
Meanwhile, Luxembourg-based Investment Holding Limited (IHL), backed by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, has taken full ownership of Switzerland's Hirslanden Group.
What does this mean for South Africans?
At this stage, the ownership change does not affect patients' medical aid, hospital services, or treatment. The Competition Tribunal approved the merger with conditions aimed at protecting employees, including a temporary prohibition on retrenchments linked to the transaction.
Remgro says the new structure will allow it to focus on expanding healthcare services in Southern Africa while responding more effectively to local market conditions and long-term investment opportunities.
This is one of the largest private healthcare ownership changes South Africa has seen in recent years and further strengthens Johann Rupert's influence in the country's healthcare sector.
